Funny, I keep coming back to this post just to look at the engraving. Love the old 2 rail fence.

Stunning.

Gournet is flat amazing at what he does. I asked him if he would rather do custom guns or upgrades and he said he really enjoyed copying what the master engravers did at the turn of the century. I do think what he did on the old 2 rail fence was amazing.

Wow.. incredible upgrade and love the early engraving patterns on the higher grade Fox guns. I do not have the DGJ issue with the Tom Kidd article and gave up sifting through other back issues to see similar examples. Did the gun in the article that yours was based upon have the frame rebates? Either way, could rebates have been incorporated into the existing Sterlingworth action? Not that lack of rebates distracts at all but just curious as to whether it was an option considered as part of the D upgrade. Again, beautiful gun and top notch craftsmanship all the way around. Hope the colors don't hide the spectacular engraving too much but I'm sure that has been considered. Best, jmc.

I just can't get enough of looking at this engraving work. What is the proper term for the "bands" that are around the circumference of the receiver balls ....... in a quarter circle beneath the balls ....... just beneath the barrel flat, on the receiver side ....... and around the floor plate? They are just superb.

The woodcock even look like they were done 100 years ago, imperfectly styled. I know beyond any doubt that was intentional.

Very nicely done.
I am envious. Dan is working on one for me also.

Stan,
Good observation; Gournet's talent transcends any era. If you haven't seen his site, here it 'tis:

I have looked at it numerous times, Gil. Thanks. He must be a workaholic. I knew a couple of wonderful engravers back in the '80s ....... both passed on now, sadly. Lynton McKenzie and Lewis Sanchez. I never watched McKenzie at work, but did spend time with Sanchez. He would carry on a conversation while working on exquisitely complex patterns. I was hesitant to even say anything for fear of distracting him and causing a blunder, but it never happened. I mentioned that to him once and he just laughed. He said he often listened to foreign language tapes while working.

Rebates could have been incorporated and I discussed doing those with Dan. Decided ultimately not to because this particular gun we were copying didn't have rebates and I wanted to be true to the original as much as possible. The original gun also had very fine but not particularly complicated checkering and we are keeping that style as well. The gun itself was in the Spring 1995 issue of the Doublegun Journal. It was the first small bore Fox D grade ever made. Haven't decided, but I may have Dan remove some but not all of the case colors after hardening so the engraving can be seen better. Seems a shame to hide it for sure. Thanks for the kind words.

Tut,
Removing some of the case IMO would be a great choice. Doug Mann posted a pic in a thread on Fox Collector site where they talk about cutting back the vibrant colors.

I have a Flues that was recased about 12 years ago, and the colors are so bold that I never have thought they looked right. May have to get it out and work on the colors some.
