Hi All -
I've purchased the 1998 16 ga. Sauer referenced in earlier emails. Ordered shells
from RST, so I'm good to go. Problem: the stock is short (13.8") and I need
to add 1/2", if A leather (preferred) recoil pad can provide it.
Where to inquire - both U.S. or Europe(?)

I don't know of a leather recoil pad. I think you really mean a leather covered rubber recoil pad. There are a couple discussions of how to do this in a couple different threads on this site. Check DIY Gunsmithing forum.

I mis-spoke: I'm looking for a leather lace-up pad. I'm told these are
available - somewhere.
I'm advised rubber pads should not be left stocks as they blemish the wood
over time. Another point: this Sauer dates from 1900 and is remarkably
well preserved. As it is fully relief engraved, I want to use a pad that looks
retro, appropriate to it's age and complements it's "up-scale" look.
A "pride of ownership" thing, I guess.

OK, I understand now. In the meantime, you could use a rubber "boot" and just take it off when not in use. This would give you time to find what you really want.

If you're looking for a "boot" style pad, I've had great luck with one by Beartooth Products. It comes in a brown that seems to blend with most stocks but more importantly consists of a very light, thin and stretchable rubberlike outer sheath that has different thickness inserts thus allowing you to get the right combination needed. It doesn't add any real weight to the gun and has the added advantage that it's so easy to install you'll find you remove it when not in the field so your gun doesn't look ugly. I've never liked the lace-on pads looks or weight but this one's pretty neat. The only thing I've had any problem with is that above about 1/2" thickness addition, they seem to be a little "loosey-goosey" sideways but you said you needed 1/2" so it's worth a try. I have had some bad experiences with rubber boots of varying compositions in regard to stock finish, especially should any moisture become trapped. I can give an enthusiastic endorsement for Galco leather velcro pads with the super soft insert inside. Steve
