My grandfather was in his first year of Law School in Dec. 1941 when the Japs attacked Pearl Harbor. On the 8th. he went to the College's quad to sign up at the Naval/Marine Aviation recruiting table. He was in line waiting when a guy came by and said "you can't wear glasses and fly". My grandfather reached up and removed his wire rim glasses and moved up. He shot down a total of 9 planes. In the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot" he shot down 7 Zeros in 9 hours. Later when he heard the war was over he went to his ship locker and put his glasses back on. He came home, finished Law School and never flew again. I wonder...Where did we get such men?
