Buzz, your complaint is a common one.
The idea of not posting the names of shooters has many elements to it, and has been a part of SxS shoots for as long as I've been going to them. Mid 90's.

I view it as a way to balance competition urges, and having fun playing with the toys urges, by the gun clubs.

Essenially, it's a way to help you come back next time.

The bigger the prizes, the greater the blood lust. And that is unseemly to the "for fun" participants.

And many of us are old. We can't hit squat. So, it saves us embarrassment too. For some, our lives are endless competitions, we would rather not have it seep into our leisure time as well.

Also, when I see the same guy win 2 out of 3 comps, I quit going.
If he's a member at that club, he's a ringer, and I know I had a less likely chance of winning a something. Why bother.
I don't go to be somebody's whipping boy.

All these kinds of things are balanced by clubs to sell tickets. And that's the whole purpose of them. To sell targets to as many people as the club can put through their courses. And of course, then to get a little from vendors that want to sell to the attendees.

I prefer to view SxS events as fundraisers for clubs that need nourishment. If I win something by accident, that's great. I'm not there to beat anyone. I'm there to help them survive.
And, play with my toys.

If I had to comp out a SxS to prove myself, I'd see that I had lost MY reasons for participating.

So, I appreciate the use of shooter numbers.
It's a sound compromise.

That is of course, unless this is a good 'ole boy shoot, where the winners are good 'ole boys. I wasn't in the running as a winner, and so the scores don't matter much to me, but had I been close to the winner's circle, I would have wanted to see the scores. I'm sure the management could care less what I think, but this is the first competitive shoot I have been to where scores were NOT posted after each competitive event. Odd, for sure.

This shoot was not about "good old boys" or a ringer, it's a fun shoot done by Lewis class (so even poor shooters like myself have a chance) and the first thing about this shoot is they want to hear how to make it better. So did you voice your concerns to Terry? Ask him to put up a score board with shooters numbers and their score? No, you probably didn't. Almost all, and I mean all of the shooters go for a good time and see old time friends that we may see only once a year and if we maybe win, great, hard to find fault with this shoot, and as you say it's the first shoot you went too...and you didn't ask or make sugestions.... This was a great shoot and if I had to choose between only one shoot to go to between this, or the Southern, Hossmann's, the Fall Southern or Duluth shoot it would be this shoot hand's down !

Hey man, I didn't say it wasn't a good shoot, in fact I said I enjoyed it. I only said I found it odd that in a competition, which this indeed was, that it was odd that no scores were posted. We did ask the people at the sign in desk about the scores and were told nothing. We were told no scores would be posted and they would not tell us why. We did express to those folks that we found it a bit odd and only received a blank stare as a response. And as far as someone who is involved knowing what I think here, I'm sure that Mark Beasland will read this.

FWIW Buzz, this shoot is and always has been a "classic" event and not a tournament. It says so right in the rules.

I don't wish to belabor this.
As I said, I do it to play with my toys.
And I am eternally grateful that some phoenix-like form of the GLSXS Assoc has returned.
I have more invites than I can attend.
And, That is fan freakin' tastic! for a SxS shooter!

Every year the "numbers only" discussion is revisited and I always say the same stuff.

I think I can say it most clearly if I just say,

SxS shoots are a hybrid of clay target sports, and the hospitality industry. Our guests experience is best when we understate competition and emphasize hospitality and delivering fun.

Buzz, if you want a competition with posted scores they are there for you. I'm sure the " Good old boys "would gladly not have to deal with broken tables and drunken snack moochers. It's about having fun and a venue to celebrates SXS guns, meet people who enjoy them and maybe introduce some new people to the sport. I know the course setters could have made anyone humble if they wanted to, it's not about that and I guess you don't get it. If it was so hard for you not to see the scores, don't waste your time or money next year. Mark Robson 4R Gunsmithing LLC
