Correct, Jon. Apples and oranges. Immigration works here with a points system. Our borders north, east and west are the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Our social policy is, in part, a multicultural experiment, watched closely by other countries.
Bill, if "the element" refers to citizens of colour, Canada's disgraceful history with indigenous peoples---isolation, neglect and abuse---is being mended slowly and positively.
We have three female premiers, two premiers openly homosexual and two indigenous premiers. Muslims are Members of Parliament, federal cabinet ministers, mayors and share distinguished roles in governments.
Federally we're legalizing marijuana, protecting the rights of the transgendered and legislating conditions for a medically assisted death, all with consultation, debate but relatively little fuss. Canada is deliberating embracing difference to make dynamism from diversity of cultures, more equality and opportunities.
With the West generally heading the other way, someone has to give it a try.
