How many use a special hinge lube ?

Does it really make that much of a difference ?

What brand is best?

Hinge lube is necesarry for a side by side and over and under to prevent wear to the hinge points. I have used Owens Hinge Lube because it can be found from several dealers.
I heard once before that just gun oil will be fine but I feel better with the heavy grease.
Just my opinion.

I use engine assembly moly grease.
Specific greases only really need be used on rotating parts & then only really if spinning at high speed.
Anything will do, IMHO. It's just that the assembly moly grease is in a tube with a thin pointy nozzle which is easy & clean to use. Also it is right there on the shelf, handy. I use it for many things needing a touch of lube on assembly.

I have used owens, but mostly I put a dab of eesox on it and let it go.

In cleaning things up in my reloading I found my owens lube and I was just thinking out loud as to whether it was worth the bother.

Mobile One Universal Synthetic. Stable from -45 to 350 degrees F. You guys using Vaseline, or any other non-synthetic, that melts into an oil at 95 degrees, go back and read that again. Mobile one is pink. When it is dirty, it isn't pink. Put a toothpick spot on and clean it off when it isn't pink anymore.

Best,
Ted

About 25 years ago I bought a small tube of synthetic brake caliper grease for some sticking front brake calipers on a Subaru I had and I've been using the same tube, for both brakes and hinge pins, ever since.

I agree with Stan, temperature extremes don't matter. And, lube is lube is lube. A month ago, Stan's favorite lube was what he uses on his peanut picking/combine equipment. Today, it's a microlon lube blue. Fact is, as long as it's lube, it does not matter all that much as to the brand. How many times has this subject come up over the past year? I think the general consensus is any lube is better than nothing. The best lube.......is what you like the best.

This subject has indeed come up often, and I have tried the Moble One grease as well as STOS. I always return to using a good quality gun oil. I think that cleaning and relubing is key.
