Helping a gentleman research a LePage

Definitely crolle - ? 3 Iron

The primary question is this mark, which may be 'SJB'

There was a relationship between Nicolas Albert Bernard and Emile Henry Fauré Le Page, and possibly the sons Albert and Leopold. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

"FAURE-LEPAGE was a arquebusier and furbisher of very great reputation. It was installed in Paris 1st, with the n° 8 of the Street of Richelieu of 1865 to 1913. This trade still existed in the years 1990. With the origin Mr. Fauré had joined to Henri Lepage, arquebusier specialized in the production of weapons rather close to the work of art, of which splendid boxes of guns of duel and very exceptional shotguns intended for very fortunate customers...

This signature, with it only, is a pledge of quality and moreover more been worth.

The weapons carrying the signature of Lepage or Fauré-Lepage are in France the equivalent of Holland and Holland in Great Britain.

Always good to remember that there are Belgian-made LePage shotguns as well, at least some of which were marketed in France. Often pretty basic guns.

Larry is of course correct. The gun is percussion, and carries no Perron (post-1811) nor Banc D'Epreuves de Liege (post-1818) mark so I believe is was manufactured in France

There was a S. J. Bernard mechanic from the 1860s. Don't recall if he was solely in Liege or to & fro from there to Paris?

I'd say there's a lovely story centred around Lepage, etc. in Paris & sourcing from Liege. Hopefully Wildcattle has the facts @ his fingertips but I'd say is lies w/ Lepage Arq-er(Arquebuiser) Du Roi á Paris or Lepage Moutier Arq-er Du Roi á Paris.

A little history here lifted from Littlegun:

http://www.littlegun.info/arme%20francaise/artisans%20k%20l/a%20lepage%20moutier%20gb.htm

Arquebusier Gilles Michel Louis Moutier-Lepage á Paris.
Arquebusier Jean André Prosper Henri Le Page.

"The firm of Lepage-Moutier was founded in 1842 by the gunmaker Louis Moutier who succeeded in that year to the business established by Henri Lepage. The business is recorded at 8 Rue de Richlieu, Paris, 1842-1865. Louis Moutier was in turn joined and succeeded by his nephew Emile Henri Fauré Lepage in 1865 and the new business continued until 1913......

Silver medals at the Paris Expositions of 1844 and 1849, and a 1st Class medal at the exposition of 1855. Further Silver medals at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London and again in 1862."

Ah, below is an article which makes a stab @ the history:

- See more at: http://www.fashions-addict.com/L-histoir...h.tUBp8I38.dpuf

Translated as best I can do or more accurately best my computer can do.

Founded under Louis XV, in 1717, the House Fauré Le Page was shown from the outset as musketeer (now they say gunsmith) kings and princes. Seven generations of the same family have succeeded in forging a legend among major French brands.
It was Louis Pigny who is behind the brand. It is officially musketeer of King Louis XV on an act of 23 October 1735 and on another act of 1756. In 1743 he sold his fund to Pierre Le Page (or Lepage), trained as a gunsmith and who married his niece. The house becomes Pigny Le Page and enjoys a fine reputation. It becomes arquebusier Marshal Saxe and then arquebusier furbisher of the House of Orleans.
Without heir Pierre Le Page gives his house in 1767 to his nephew Jean Le Page (pictured cons) that he trained for four years. Jean Le Page family continues the work and increases the prestige of the brand. Over the years the brand creations and brings many technical innovations in its field and deposited numerous patents. Inventions that are the delight of the greatest museums. The aristocracy and the greatest notables come to provide for Le Page. The page retains its address at 13, rue de Richelieu near the Palais-Royal which places it at the heart of events in our history. Indeed the family Fauré Le Page engages notch in the history of France by arming the revolutionaries of 1789 and 1830. Balzac, Dumas, Chateaubriand, Pushkin and countless authors celebrate this House in their most famous novels. Thanks to him the reputation of the home page s 'internationalized thanks to its participation in exhibitions in Paris in 1823, 1827, 1834 and one from 1839 where he won a silver medal.
In 1842, he sold the direction of the house to his son Gilles Michel Moutier-Louis Le Page. The brand is the symbol of French craftsmanship. House unites the most talented crafts. Gunners, founders, welders, locksmiths, burnishers, sculptors, modelers, carvers, engravers, keyers, spin doctors, saddlers, gainiers, leather, silversmiths, jewelers participated in the realization of the masterpieces of the House.
At that time the company continues to expand as Le Page-Moutier. The successes are still there and he made a fortune. He joins his nephew Emile Henry Le Page in 1865. The latter became the sole owner of the house and 1868. It develops international clientele and becomes official supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia. The prices collected during the world exhibitions confirm the global reach of the brand. Emile Henry Le Page is a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1878 and an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1894.
The historic shop settles at 8, rue de Richelieu. In 1913, the gunsmith Dumond succeeded Fauré Le Page, but the old house keeps the name and became a limited company in 1925. Thereafter, the house changes hands several times. While retaining its activity armory and sale of hunting accessories, the house develops leather goods.
In 2012, the seventh Parisian address of Fauré Le Page opens its doors at 21 rue Cambon in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. The leather goods collection, decorated with the scales pattern bears the mark of its glorious past and its eternal modernity. The house is symbolized today the number 7. It marked the great moments of the history of the brand 1717 opening of the first Auction House in the heart of Paris. 7 generations of a family who forged his legend. 7 French sovereigns since Louis XV, have distinguished the gunsmith. 7 steps are needed to develop the Web Scales. 7 Scales separate signatures that punctuate the canvas. 7 times 3 = 21 rue Cambon, Paris seventh address of Fauré Le Page. 7 times 2 = 14 September 2012 opening of the Auction House.

Louis Moutier, arquebusier of profession, wife in 1830 the line of Henry Lepage, son and successor of Jean Lepage. In 1842 he succeeds to his father by taking the direcion the famous arquebuserie 8, rue de Richelieu in Paris. It is from this date that he signs his arms L. Lepage-Moutier, while patents are filed by Louis Moutier-Lepage. Until 1848 he added to his signature the Arquebusier mention of King and Princes (1848 saw the end of the monarchy in France (King Louis-Philippe)). Some sources state of a possible manufacture of its weapons á Liege, weapons that were then assemblies and signed by Loius Lepage Moutier in Paris. Confusion can also easily be done if you know the name of Lepage is not unknown in the world of the armory of the city of the Prince-Bishops or, at this time, it is reported, including Lepage Brothers (Charles and Alphonse Lepage), whose registered office is in Paris, 12, rue d'Enghien, but whose weapons are manufactured at the factory Lepage Brothers á Liège. But, according to various souces, the Lepage Brothers are not at all related to Lepage that concern us.
In 1865, Louis Lepage Moutier-partners with Henri Faure -Lepage, son of Fauré officer and Eleonore Lepage, daughter of Jean Lepage and thus sister of the father-Louis Moutier. This association lasted until the latter's death in 1868.

Was Louis Pigny the builder of those highly adorned and gold inlayed flintlock or miquelet fowlers you see in museums and such?
