But my pace is in keeping... thanks, Hans.

I liked this template material - clearish plastic from a cracked storage container. It worked and sanded without being too feathery. The cheek area was left about 1/8" too long until the grip felt right, then detail the cheek using the template.

Nice job Yeti! Are you gonna checker her yourself or send it out? Are you going to do a basic patter or what? Be sure to keep us up to date.

I figured I would share what my current project gun is. When I picked up my Deane & Adams shotgun that I have shown on another post, this had just come in. It was very cheap beacause of the shattered stock, but the metal on it is very good and the bore is excellent. Though not a shotgun, I have always had a fondness for single shot rifles and particularly have always wanted a Stevens Favorite. This is the 1915 model.

My son is only 15 months, but I figure this will make a great boy's rifle for him someday. It will end up being a bit of a fantasy gun when I'm done with it. The action and barrel will have to be totally hand polished. I will restock it in the traditional style, but the nice blank of curly maple that it sits on in the photograph will be what I use. I also plan on color case hardening the action using the Bone and Charcoal method that I have been playing around with for awhile. This will, of course, deviate from the usual cyanide case more commonly used with Stevens guns. I will, however, rust blue the balance of the parts which should be more traditional. An antique peep sight in my collection will round out the job. Here are a couple shots of this gun as it is now.

I like that, you are creating a family heirloom. You have placed your Son on a good path.

There will come a time when years from now you will be thinking of a loved grandchild that will be it's owner for a while.

You will have earned some well deserved pride in that work.

Alex, you don't know me but I would be happy to engrave your son's initials on the action after you anneal & polish it. Building a rifle for a young son is commendible. I can be trusted as others here know me can testify. Just let me know. Ken

Ken, thanks for the generous offer. I actually have all the engraving equpment and used to do a fair bit with it, but I haven't done much in the last few years. In any event, I'm sure I'm not anywhere close to your level. Still, I have been thinking I will probably engrave a simple monogram similar to what Winchester used to do on some of their rifles. I've never done any gold inlay work, but I might actually do a bit of practicing and possibly try it on this one when I get to that stage, I think a very simple gold inlayed monogram might look kind of nice on this rifle. Thanks again for the offer.

Just out of curiosity, what are you using for engraving equipment? I have owned a Magnagraver for several years, but have been thinking about upgrading to possibly a Gravermeister, or Gravermax. Do you have any opinions on either of these? The Magnagraver just seems a bit awkward in comparison to some of the hand pieces that either of these other two are capable of using.

Regards,

Alex Johnson

This here rolling block side-lever conversion has been taking up too much of my time. Its actually a inline .50 cal muzzle loader that I'm hopefully of taking an Elk with this year in CO. Axtel sights, spirit globe up front, tang hunter in the rear, tapered octagon barrel. I took about .012" off each side with the mill to remove pitting, reamed the action and turned new pins, converted it to side-lever, reshaped the hammer, drilled a 7/16" hole to lighten the hammer, added an over stop for the trigger and other stuff I cant think off right now. the trigger pull is a crisp 1&3/4lbs. An antique marbles folding leaf will grace the barrel. The action should head out to John Gillet for colors and charcoal blue this week. I stocked it and there is no finish on in the photos, just solarlux american walnut stain.

You are something, that is vary nice, I like the lever vary much, it doesn't look like the one your neighbor to the East has, the lever that eats fingers. Neat idea for an inline, who would ever guess?
