Now, this is all over the net...a 9mm defense. But excuse me...I think he's gone with an 870.

I will remember that. Where I hunt black bear they have never seen a human. One evening I was in a tree stand over a bait using a 50 cal black powder Hawkens muzzle loader. I shot the bear I wanted and it went off about 75 yds and died. Just as I thought to decend the tree a gorgeous male came into the bait laid down and tucked in. I yelled at him, threw my water bottle at him and shot into the tree just over his head. All he did was glance up at me. Perplexed I was not sure what to do and I didn't need to shot him. Finally I reloaded and aimed at the bait barrel just over his head and calculated I could put the bullet through the edge of that barrel and then into the barrel next to it. Upon firing the bear got up growled a bit then waddled off into the woods. After about 10 minutes I scrambled down the tree and beat a hasty retreat just like you. Next morning I came back with a few other hunters to retrieve the one I had shot. There is more to the story but that is the jist of it. At one point two bears were funning about and that was when I learned just how fast they could scramble through the bush. If they want you there in no way you will get away

Back in the woods this morning. I was looking for bear sign this time. I don't know if I've just been missing it all Summer or that the coming Fall has them on the move.

I found the tracks of two cubs traveling down a sandy bed two path road. I walked the tracks a couple hundred yards and found bear scat as well as tracks.

They've been feeding on wild grapes and some other fruit that looked like pears. Someone's bait pile maybe or crab apples, maybe plums. I didn't study it too closely.

Bears may be old hat to most of you, but it is a whole new deal for me. I'm having fun...Geo

"Mind if I borrow that book?" Six of the most chilling words in the English language. Despite my "Ex Libris" of sorts inscribed in my copy of The View from Rat Lake by John Gierach, this book fell into the black hole of borrowed books for almost 2 decades before Frank "found" it in his library and returned it a few months ago. wink
