Just looked at Holts site.... dang it's getting where the peasants like me can't afford the auctions. 25 % premium on the first $5000...... I'm not sure it's worth the risk if you don't handle it ect..

Sure wish some of ya'll would think about me when you write your will.

Holts have been at 25% for several years now.

Dig has a wee article here: http://www.vintageguns.co.uk/articles/the-hidden-costs-of-auction-buys/

I've rolled the dice at Holts for the last time most likely. The cost to ship, 25% premium, the fact the I don't get to view the gun and must pay someone to view everyone I'm interested in all add up. Plus auctions are mostly cripples not gems being sold at bargain prices. Anything pristine or even just decent gets bought in person unless it goes for near retail. Anything with major problems is not bought by those in attendance. So I figure I have as much chance to buy a decent gun near retail price or worse a bargain prices cripple which becomes a money pit.

Gone are the days of buying a gun for less than a grand, having it sent by mail directly to your house.

It's a catch 22. Cheap guns don't pay to import while expensive guns are too risky to import. You buy a klunker for 500-1000, spend another 500 bringing it home and you have more invested in the gun than it's worth. Or spend 4-5000, plus 500 and hope you did not buy a gun with major problems because if you did you are going to loose even more money. Catch 22. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Many years ago I purchased a Wesley Richards drop lock at Christies. I called over there and the guy got the gun in his hands and we went over it in great detail. Sounded good, so I bid on it and won. As soon as I got the gun I knew was not operating properly. Sent if off the Nick Makinson to get it working. $450 later plus shipping up to him, it worked. That was about 18 years ago, so $450 back then was a big repair bill

I bought a small Purdey cartridge bag last year at their auction. I had been wanting a cartridge bag like this one for awhile. I paid what a new one would cost after they sent me all the bills. Plus had to pay shippimg twice, once from over there to here and then again down to N.C..
Then after all that the damn cartridge bag (50 count)is really to small.
