Back, so here are some photos.

Like this little gun even more looking at these photos.... Probably worth the $450 I paid for it if it performs in the field.

this is not a rho but a "j" (1931).
And I think it is a sideplated boxlock, and not a sidelock...
Nice gun, though...Especially for $450!

Raimey: it's usually Acier Siemens Martele and has been found on Francotte and others.

About the middle here is a Masquelier with barrels by Falla
http://www.littlegun.be/arme%20belge/artisans%20identifies%20ma/a%20masquelier%20gb.htm

Falla listed Siemens-Martin via Joseph Cap

I'll bet Cockerill Sambre was providing the new fangled steel

Not to dispute, but what are the clues that it is a sideplated boxlock?

Drew:

Not to be obstinate, but it reads Acier Martelé, unless Siemens Martin(or rather Siemens) is assumed/implied?

Subject longarm

Other longarm w/ Siemens Martin(?) tube steel?

Siemens Martin Steel

So the clue might be the sole bolting crosspin near the centre of the lock, which might obstruct the hammer?

I have seen any number of true sidelocks which only had a single cross pin. "IF" this is a side plated boxlock they sure went to the trouble to put in a lot of False pins.

I've seen such efforts to disguise/mask but pulling the locks will tell the tale.

Wow, thanks for all the discussion of this. A "J" seems a good conclusion for that mark, 1931, as the '58 date seemed a bit "modern" for this gun and market.

Hate to admit it, but given the provenance and apparent target market of this gun, a side plated boxlock makes sense. All those pins reminded me of a sidelock, ergo my initial conclusion: fooled me! Since the screws don't appear to have been turned, I'm not going to take it apart of confirm, however.

And no, no Siemens on the barrel, and expected it as I'd read the prior discussion about acier martele.

Here is a somewhat better photo of the barrel where the NL is a bit more visible, I hope.

If its sling swivels had been all intact, rear one was removed, I'd have shipped this off to Montana for the sharptail and hun hunt coming up. But I do like slings when walking 6-8 miles per day so will baptize this one on local preserve birds to check the choking.
