I've seen such efforts to disguise/mask but pulling the locks will tell the tale.
Cheers,

It wouldn't be that difficult to remove the lock, just cautiously, with the aide of a bastard file, work down a turnscrew to mate the screw-head. & you might want to give it a good rap on the end to break the initial friction. Back it out & with the locks in battery, reverse thread the right lock from the outside & gently remove it. But if you do send it out, see if images can be obtained of the backs of the locks.
Drew, I see the term hammer steel but I'm still left wanting as I don't see the French version Acier Martelé?
Cheers,

Valuation as follows.
Brand Value level five (no name continental) BV5.
Original Quality grade six (second quality grade BLE - maybe) OQ6.
Current Condition level looks to be about four (heavy use but no abuse) CC4.
BV5-OQ6-CC4 = $441 16 ga = 1.5X So, say, $660.
If it is a sidelock, OQ5 (border engraved SLE).
BV5-OQ5-CC4 = $599 16 ga = 1.5X So, $900.

Correctomundo Raimey, the pin is right in the tumbler path, which would make it a hindrance for proper function to say the least. Acier Martele means "(cold) hammered steel", which is pretty generic as these things go. I would not attach much value or meaning to it. It's just marketing I guess. WC-

Another way to know without pulling the locks is to count the screw heads between the trigger guard and the hinge on the bottom of the action. There will be two on this gun (boxlock), vs one on a sidelock. I have only seen one vendor who could fake that one out (Dumoulin). Yet another way is to look and see if the tumbler axis rotates while the gun is cocked and upon (dry) firing. However, some of the fake sidelocks have a fake tumbler axis that rotates when the gun is being cocked and fired. At that stage it's almost cheaper to go for a real sidelock! WC-

WC, I was about to mention the axis pin. Don't think I've ever seen one that rotates on a sideplated boxlock. Bernardelli didn't go that far.

Blade cocked indicator. So in other words you won't see a cocking indicator(blade, clockhand, other) on a fake sidelock? On the lock, the tell-tale signs are the position of the lock crosspin(Blue arrow) & the lack of rotation of the axle(Red arrow). Cheers, Raimey rse

Agreed the position of the crosspin is questionable. I will note though that not all sidelocks have the axle marked as a cocking indicator.
