Anybody got a cheap, easy way to polish pitting from just forward of the chambers? I've seen those little expandable
hones made for polishing auto cylinders and wonder if they'd work on shotguns. I've also tried laps made from leather washers dressed with valve gringing compound. Any remedies you guys know of would be helpful. Thanks, Chops

A carefully managed "Turks head" on a drill and oil?

Man, the turk's head would be too drastic --- like dragging a bale of barbed wire through the bores. I reckon I'll stay with the piston ring hone and leather washer drawbar with valve grinding compound. Thanks anyway, Cadet. Chops

I know of no easy and cheap way myself. I tend to ream the bores with a backbore reamer if possible. Its amazing what increasing bore diameter by .005" can do for removing pitting. Of course this is exspensive and so are the reamers.

I am curious about the backbore reamer approach. Brownells sells them in .730" and .735" If your bore is already .730", can you go to .735" in one pass withthe reamer?

The multi-ball bore hones that Brownell's sells are manufactured by Brush Research Manufacturing Co. in the Los Angeles area. They will mail you a very nice catalog with tech tips in it, and showing their full range of hones.

yes you can do .005" with a sharp reamer. Use a slow feed and cutting fluid flooding the tool to remove the chips, it leaves an excellent finish.

I use two grades of Scotch Brite on a dowel and a drill. Coarse cuts them quick and fine polishes very nice with a little light oil. You wanted cheap! Easy!

I've bought a number of the "ball type" hones from Brush Research Mfg since they are local to me. I can tell you that they don't remove much material and are better suited to just smoothing up some forcing cone work or choke work than any thought of removing pitting. If Russ was still kickin, he'd say the same.
