I recognize this may be considered heresy by some, but I am contemplating getting a modern coating type finish on my travel gun (Winchester 23). I am looking into teflon or a ceramic coatings. I want to avoid the need to engage in the same level of every day maintenance that I have on my other doubles. Additionally, I would like the advantage of a non-reflective surface.

I recognize these finishes are generally "baked" on, but I am told this is done at a relatively low temperature (under 300 degrees F.). I do not think it will be an issue with loosening the ribs.

Has anyone else tried this and if so what was your experience?

Yep, it is heresey, but it is your firearm and you are free to do what you want. Teflon would probably work.

I would look into the Roguard finish from Robar. My using guns/ everyday guns have this and it has given great service on all. I live not to far from the coast and that good old salt water gets in all my stuff when I get out on the big water. Some of my users have over twenty years with this finish and still look like the day I got them back from Robby.

Just an FYI. These finishes are kinda a one-way street. I don't think there's any chemical process to remove the finish, it's gotta be sandblasted.

A couple friends asked about having their guns "parkerized," which they said is a sort of black long-wearing finish used on military arms, particularly at sea. I associated the word with improving a pistol's trigger and action. Is it a chemical or teflon finish, please? What is Roguard? That may be the ticket.

I have done paint over Parkerized finishes, never ever on a decent sporting shotgun, AKs & FALs only. I have a beat old High Standard pump I plan to finish in such a manner. The finishes hold up OK.

But strongly reconsider FUBARing a Model 23, how about just giving it a good coat of paste wax, don't buff, just let it sort of dry on the gun. That will give pretty good protection during a hunting trip and you can always clean it off with Alcohol or similar solvent.

King,

Parkerizing was popular with the military during WWII. They considered it a "tougher" finish than bluing.

Brownells suggest that the best results are achieved if the firearm has been sandblasted. I have never heard that it was better in a salt water environment.

This is the link for Roguard:

When I went caribou hunting to Quebec a decade ago I gave my hundred years old engraved Mannlicher rifle one good spraying with Accuproof (made in Canada). After ten rainy days the rifle was like new. According to manufacturer one spraying is good for six months. I would use it again.
