I am new to drillings and would like some input on this one. It is a Fortuna, marked Suhl in 12x12 over 7x57R, supposedly made in the late 80's; the serial no. is 4928. The scope in claw mounts is a Zeiss Diatal 6x42. Overall, the gun appears to be in 95% or better condition. I would think it is a low grade drilling, but I am looking for a working gun. I would appreciate anyone with knowledge of these guns sharing it with me and an estimate of it's worth. Also, there is only one adjustment turret on the scope, so I assume windage adjustment is done by the screws on the claw mount. Can anyone help me out on this?

Not sure of realized value but it was ordered by & peddled by AKAH - Albrecht Kind. They may have their ledger? https://www.akah.eu/Any more images of the marks? Cheers, Raimey rse

well, the asking price is $2400......I figure the scope and claw mounts are worth a good part of that. Are these well-built and serviceable guns?

Yeah, blitz action work horse w/ full pipe stem side reinforcement. I'd say that is a deal for a post WWII drilling.

Thank you......7x57 is my favorite caliber; I know the gun would be lighter and handle better if it was 16 gauge, but every 16x16 over 7x57R or 6.5x57R I've found looks like it had the pudding shot out of it....and nearly all of them were missing the scope and claw mounts. I think I'll get this one. When it arrives, I'll take pics of all the markings and PM them to you for more information. Thanks again, gary

Be sure not to let it get away. Yeah, the mounts & glass would approach 1/2 of asking price. NECG can do a modified set of mounts for missing components cheaper, but the real deal is much more.

This Fortuna drilling was manufactured by "VEB Ernst Taehlmann Werke, Suhl, DDR (German Democratic Republic), a combined factory from former Merkel, Simson, Sauer etc. after WWII. Fortuna was a brand of Ernst Thaelmann Werke. The communist leader Ernst Thaelmann was murdered 1944 in KZ. Most of the hunting weapons of this DDR era were from low quality due missing material from high quality. This low grade drilling with hardened color finish is very cheap in Europe (300.- / 500.- €) only scope and its mount is from high quality. The scope mount is a "Suhler Einhakmontage", best of all. To adjust the side you must use the screw on the rear turret, to adjust the high you must use the screw under the cap on the top of the scope. If you will remove the scope you must pull back the grips on the rear turret. Ger

windage adjustment on these mounts is done by adjusting the 2 larger screws on the rear mount work out which way the rear of the scope has to move - left or right - then loosen BOTH screws then tighten (and move the scope) on one side until your shots are centred then tighten the screw opposite to lock everything in place
i.e. if your shots are to the right of centre, move the rear of scope by tightening the right hand screw little by little until you are centre

GaryW, During the 1970s,Waffen Frankonia, sold many of these drillings, to everyday regular hunters, who found them to be solid working guns. American soldier hunters also bought them, due to the mostly reasonable price. The particular scope/ mount combination is especially good. To buy a new one here and have it mounted by NECG, with completely new clawmounts would likely cost about as much as the asking price. Personally, I prefer 16 ga., but I concede most Americans(and now most Germans)prefer 12 ga. When adjusting the windage, be aware that some windage screws "pull" the scope when tightened and some "push" it. It just depends on which part of the mount, the particular manufacturer chose to thread. There will likely be witness marks on the back of the rear mount. You only need to remember to move the rear of the scope in the direction you want the bullet to go. Ammo for the rifle, made by Z&B is currently available at a pretty good price. RWS ( my preference for my 7x57R) is also available at a higher price. If you like 7x57, you may have loading dies. If so, you can use them, and only change shellholder. The drilling has 70mm shotgun chambers, which are the American standard 2 3/4" shells. I recently noticed that Simpson Ltd. has a 12ga/22mag. insert barrel(einstecklauf), which is a very useful accessory to have. Mike
