Leo,
I don't think the ammo issue ever changed. Just a rule that gets twisted in the wind from one counter monkey to the next.

I packed my ammo in the case last summer to Namibia. So did my hunting buddy. He has done it that way for years.

Take a look at the Tuffpak:

I have used them with no complaints. They now come with the TSA locks.

You might also want to look at a golf club travel case:

Yepper Chuck. You'll hate the weight until you look out the window at Seatac airport and see the disappointment on the faces of the baggage handlers as they take turn throwing the case to the ground driving over it with the tractor, you know their brand of fun.

I highly recommend Pelican. We used them extensively when I was military-never saw one break and they saw rough treatment. They are airtight with a purge valve and do a great job of keeping out the ultra fine dust of the desert. I bought one for myself and have been very pleased. Its been all over the US and up to Northern Quebec on float planes and twin otters two times. Each time I arrived with an undamaged gun that was still sighted in.

The Pelican factory is about half a mile from my house. I have used them for various industrial applications and they've always performed.

Leo-

I know in 2004 I was flying with ammo in the gun case. It could have been 2003 though, but definitely NOT in 2002. Anyway, it has been that way for a few years. Before that I would have to keep ammo in my suitcase, per the regs.

Regarding the regs, no, in the past you could not fly with ammo in your gun case. I fly a lot with guns, in several countries on several continents, and it was consistent. Now eveyrwhere I go they tell you to just throw it in the gun case.

Regarding locks: I just use Master locks I bought at WalMart where I got 4 locks keyed the same. I always fly with 2 locked on the case and just hang around the ticket counter until TSA calls me to open the case. They always scan it to see if they will have to open it, but every time I fly they wind up opening the case. Does not really matter to me. After the inspection the case is locked again and I go through security.
