Several ways to spot a fake 28 gauge Model 12. First, ask the seller to remove the buttstock, the original factory gauge stamping will be found on the rear boss of the receiver. The 28 gauge M12's were built on the same frame as the 20 and 16 gauge M12's. Then look at the forward magazine loop hanger. the original 28 gauge will be stamped 28 on the rear left (left side of the receiver, opposite the right side ejection port- also, if you know metallurgy, that part on an original factory 28 gauge will be blued forged and machined steel, not the post 1964 investment cast hanger- and finally, the extractor on the 28 gauge is different in shape at hook than the one found on the 16 and 20 gauge M12's- but you have to know how to remove it from the bolt, and what to look for.
There are more crooked gun hustlers extant on the 28 gauge M12's- none on the Model 42's, so perhaps those are a better investment. Saw a 28 gauge skeet with a factory Cutts and solid rib for sale at Cabela's the other day-- 50% wood finish and checkering, 65% blue- asking price is $11,500 and there are no extra choke tubes or choke tube wrench included. They also have a field grade M21 20 gauge 28" barrels with a matching set of 30" 28 gauge barrels- straight handed grip, Silvers orange pad, Kidney shaped beavertail forearm, 95% blue and wood- $16,750.

With the Model 12 you have two groups the users and the collectors.
Model 42 bidding up t0 $2,200.00
Model 12 Trap 1954 Original 2 pin duck at $630.00, 2 bids, 2 days left.
Model 12, 20 gauge 2 barrel set at $1,000.00, 3 bids, 4 days left.
Model 12 heavy duck 3" at $799.00, 1 bid, 1 day left.
Model 12 Deluxe 28 gauge at $1,850.00, 3 bids, 1 day left.
Most of the user Model 12s were in line with other makers, Remington, Ithaca, etc.
The following were seen at LGS: 1. Model 12 12ga 28" Mod (ca. early 1950s) excellent original condition $549 2. Model 12 3" 12ga 30" Full (ca. late 1950s) excellent original condition $699. 3. Model 1200 12ga 20" Cyl long mag tube Police Stainless Steel with iron sights (ca. 1980 all surfaces hard matte chromed birch? stock with sling swivels) excellent original condition $329. I purchased #3.

The most bullet-proof 28 ga M-12 receiver discriminant is the cutoff raceway angle milled inside the frame. Parts can be stamped 28, receivers can be stamped 28. Faking the raceway, not so easy.
Another way to tell a "real" 28 from a converted 20/16 is cycling. Shell noses tend to hang up on the chamber opening of "real" ones. Conversion guns tend to work nicely.

Thanks, Sam. My 28 gauge M12 does exactly that with the older 2&7/8" red Western paper hulls that came with it. As I am too cheap to pay $14.95/box for AA skeet loads at Mega-Mart to feed it, I can't say if this happens with today's plastic hulls. If we had a legal dove season in MI I might consider shooting it- my dentist and his pal shoot 28 gauge Beretta O/U (Cheney's choice for dustin' off lawyers in TX I hear)as they would reload No. 8 target loads for me, if I provide the empty hulls- Ah well, another "safe queen" from the Big Red WRA--RWTF

Bob, just down the road from me has a Model 12 Pigeon Skeet in 28 gauge.
Went back to Winnie at some time in the past and has a post vent rib, nice wood, and is spotless. Looks new.
Any takers at $10k ? Put it on Gunbroker, it will sell. Put it on Gunbroker with pics proving it is a true 28 gauge Model 12. I would like to see that bidding war.

Jagermeister, you certainly like those 'Police' specials. Police specials aren't really my thing. Through the years I owned only one genuine police shotgun in form of Ithaca 37 with bayonet attachment/heat shield ca. 1967. I also had Mossberg 500ATS8? from late 70s which was Military/Police model with parkerized finish. I don't think this Winchester is police model they just stamped 'Police' on the barrel. It is like new shotgun at half cost of new 870 Marine Magnum. While 870 is probably better design it isn't twice as good as the Winchester. When I see something I can use at fair price I buy it.

Too bad that you can't seem to find even one double gun at a fair price Jagermeister. I recall when you attempted to portray that Ithaca model 37 as a WWII trench shotgun, but made the mistake of mentioning the 3" chamber and choke tubes. Have you at least tried to rent a double? I don't really think you have any real interest in doubles since you do not own even one, but instead have other reasons for posting regurgitated crap here. Did you really part with $329.00 for that birch stocked 1200, or is it another gun you put on lay-away, but will end up not buying? How does a birch stock hold up under recoil? I know it's not an issue in the Chinese .22 LR rifle that you rent.
Lastly, since you can't proudly vote for the anti-gunner Obama a third time, who are you in the tank for this time? Never mind. I think that's one question we all know the answer to.
Voting for anti-gun Democrats is dumber than giving treats to a dog that shits on a Persian Rug
