On all the A5's that I am aware of the friction rings had to be switched around as described for different loads. I never owned one of them, have shot a few, but as I recall the 3" 12 was supposed to be able to function with the 3 3/4DE-1oz "Express" load in a 2 3/4" shell but nothing lighter.
With too much friction applied the gun would fail to function, with not enough it would rattle your teeth.
Being used to solid breech guns I always detested the "Double Shuffle" feel of an A5 when shooting one.

I've acquired an appreciation of the 'Fla-Thoonk' sound and tactile feedback of the long recoil system.

Admittedly, I initially thought the things were simply outmoded and over complex.

It's an often misunderstood gun.

Just the fact that it dates from 1900 and for a very long time was the only automatic shotgun that sold in numbers makes it worth a second look just to admire the design and manufacturing.

The 'humpback' misnomer is a little annoying to A5 admirers. There's no hump. There is a square profile for sure, that's so the bolt has someplace to go. 'Squareback' I'll buy.... but 'humpback'? That's just silly.

And, you don't see that part of the gun when shooting it anyway. At least you shouldn't. Combined with the semi-pistol grip stock, the guns handle very well. The triggers are generally better than most stock automatics too.

Jonsey;
Of all the single barrel repeaters I have ever shot or handled if I simply could not get a double & had to shoot one I would probably take an A5 & learn to live with its flopping around. To me "Personally" they have about the best feel & balance that is closer to a double than any other repeater I have handled or shot. The square back doesn't bother me a bit, in fact I kinda like it. I would have to dig back & look up specs on different guns but I think the square back allows for a slightly shorter overall length than most repeaters, which may be the reason for the different balance.
Most everyone I have know who used them extensively have liked them, but I just like them 2-Pipers.

My problem, of course, is that I like them all.
