You won't find a gun made prior to 2005 that carries the proofmarks "steel shot" or the fleur de lys, unless it has been subsequently reproofed. Those proofmarks weren't added until then. However, if a gun carries the superior/magnum proof, then as far as pressure goes, there should not be a problem. But, as noted above, that leaves the issue of choke, and the possible issue of barrel walls thin enough to end up with a ring bulge. I'd say that if the gun is superior proof and if the choke is no tighter than mod, and if you shoot steel no larger than 4's at moderate velocity, you should be OK. But if it were me, I'd probably go with something like Kent's Bismuth.
Steel shot proof requires no higher pressure than superior proof. The only difference is that the proof loads contain steel shot.

Thanks guys. This is the stuff I was looking for. I'll try and get a picture of the proof marks. I've been told that overall, these are pretty good guns.

Amen, brother. Guarantee or no guarantee, the price (value) of the gun makes the most difference. No 1300 fps ounce and a quarter #2 goose loads through a seven pound Purdey, regardless of the proof stamps.

What kind of a value hit does a ring bulged Arrieta take on the open market?
I remember reading the barrel change costs were over 4k. Prolly over 5k now
Out there doing it best I can.

Chokes are .008 and .023 and it's proof marks show 1200 BAR.

Chokes are .008 and .023 and it's proof marks show 1200 BAR. That's superior proof, so OK for steel as far as pressure goes.

Unsaleable? There is a buyer for just about anything, so if you like the gun...buy it...enjoy it...and let your heirs worry about the back end. Way to many people out there worrying about getting their money back. JMHO.

Well, it looks like I'm going to be the PROUD new owner of a Griffin and Howe Arrietta. I capitalized proud because my buddy, who owned the gun, lost his life two weeks ago. Owning one of his guns will be more than just owning a gun, it will be keeping a little piece of him with me. Since he was the one who got me into doubles in the first place, and he bred my current GFC FC Brittany, its only appropriate that I use one of his guns over a dog he bred, doing what he and I loved to do.
