Can't imagine it, but I suppose there are guys that load up an autoloader and empty the magazine trying to down one bird! Karl

In the little, tiny, backwater of Mpls/St. Paul you can't normally find 28 gauge ammunition. The usual suspects will have a box or two of something, but, you can usually count on one or both of them being on the order of 1oz loads of steel 4s or something else just as useless. I ran out of 16 gauge ammunition in South Dakota one time. I was all done with that gun until I cleaned it when I got home. Where, I had plenty of 16 gauge ammunition. Oh well.
Best, Ted I'd be surprised if Cabela's in Rogers (and maybe the one in Woodbury) don't have both 16 and 28ga shells. Woodbury had nada last time I was in it, 'bout two months past. Did buy my wife a cute little wool jacket in the bargain cave, but, that was it. Gander had a little bit of Fiocchi, perhaps 6 boxes, of two different loads, a 7 1/2 shot hunting load and a 8 shot target load. I bought one box of each. Blaine Fleet Farm, Blaine Wal Mart, and Coon Rapids Dick's have never had a box that I have been able to find. There was a box of Federal high brass 28 gauge 6s at a gas station on the way up Lexington past Viking (getting rural fast out that way) but, it was $29. I didn't buy it. Best, Ted

I didn't look for 16 gauge at any of those stores, as I'm still working off a pallet of 16 gauge English 2 1/2" loads I bought in the mid 1990s. Never thought I'd say it, but, I wish I had bought two pallets. Dick's in Bloomington, MN didn't have a single round of 28 gauge the last time I was there, either. I think that is the flagship store. The only 28 gauge ammunition my gun club, Metro, in Blaine has, is an 8 shot loading of Rio. They had, at one time, several different loads of Winchester AAs in 28, but, those days are sadly gone.
Best, Ted

Lining up ducks, Geo. It was wasteful to do otherwise. Two guys in a blind or crawling up and ready to shoot we'd say two heads lined up, wait for the other guy to indicate similarly, then fire. Quite a bit of tooing-and-froing sometimes but usually within 20 yards and results satisfactory. Flying shots had to be a sure thing. Our postmaster, a lame old gunner named Maurice "Monnie" Slauenwhite, once killed 21 whistlers with both barrels.

Geo, I was taught to try and line up two quail at a time for one shot on the covey flush. Once did it twice on the same covey flush shooting my 28 pump gun, then missed a single with the last shell. Swear I thought I could have a triple double that day. Must have been 20 plus birds in that covey. We had some big coveys on our farm in my youth. We have six coveys on the farm this year. Best numbers in 20 plus years. Took 16 birds off the farm on Monday.
Had a uncle who seemed to only kill cock quail when he shot. I am sure he killed a few hens but I can remember them. With a Crescent .410 he was as good as any hunter I ever knew with a 12. Rare were his misses. I have his .410 and found it was open and laser choked with eight to nine pound trigger pulls. I left it just as he had it but struggle to hit birds with heavy triggers.

Well, had to travel a bit but found shells in Clarion County (Rte. 66 Sports) and even Venango county (Mauer's). At $21/box I'll have to be as frugal as the old quail hunters mentioned here.

Just to be clear Lloyd, that lining up business never (ever) had anything to do with quail, unless they were flying; my Grandfather made sure of that! Turkeys and ducks and such were a whole 'nother matter. I once got an on purpose a two-fer on deer...Geo I better be careful, or I'll get JR on my back again.

I'm surprised you found them there, even. Lots of winding two lanes roads up there makes for some sloooowwww travel.

Few years ago, 11 flying blacks---one over the limit, which couldn't help---by one shot by my friend (his second pull didn't work) and two from my 20ga o/u SKB---most I've ever got without "lining-up." For some reason, Jake always retrieved ducks to my left boot. (Easy now, I'm the lefty, not Jake!) What a sight. What a day. What a dog. All now dear memories. I'm grateful for them.

Best, Ted The Rios aren't too bad. I've shot quite a few woodcock and a lot of very close to wild (early release) quail with them. Just for the heck of it, I cut open a Rio 8 and a Win AA 8 (standard target load, not the hotter Sporting version) not long ago. The AA wins for consistent pellet roundness, but the Rio gives you about 30 more pellets. Slightly smaller shot, probably closer to 8 1/2. I've sometimes found 16's (but never 28's) in a couple Holiday Stations in the UP. Not necessarily exactly what you're looking for, but I always check just to see if they have any.
