treblig1958: I had some distractions during my trip that limited my activities a bit (my father passed on Monday), but I managed to get out for a few days. It is always a treat to walk in the forests of my youth. I've had no flushes and saw no sign of birds (so far) and I'm in the process of boxing up my gear, but maybe this afternoon will be different.

Sorry to hear about your Dad passing, Lloyd. I wish your brother well.
I remember the discussion we had on the subject at grousemas. But, it is never something we look forward to, and something that most of us will go through, eventually.

Larry,
Your favorite "Outmost Forefitters" came through yesterday. I bought THE LAST flat of Herters 7 1/2 28 gauge loads on the shelf at the Rogers location. There actually were a few other loads, including a Remington 7 1/2 load, available in flats, but, it was 'sorta picked over. My kid found a pretty low end spring jacket in the bargain cave for $13, that had been priced at $59. The Herters loads were $79.99 a flat.
They were giving away some plastic ammo boxes, you got a clear one if you bought a flat of something. Next to the clear ones were green plastic ones, and I asked the manager if I could pay the difference and take a green one. He told me to take whichever one I wanted, and get it out of there.

He was sick of tripping over them.

Happy New Year, everybody.

Best,
Ted

That's kind of you Ted. He was old and sick (just 10 days short of his 91st birthday) and it wasn't a surprise, but....I was just too sad to hunt for most of this trip. Visited w/friends and enjoyed my own family more this time. There's a B-17 somewhere that just got it's left seat filled again. Godspeed Dad!

Sorry for your loss Lloyd3. My father is 90 plus and I am not looking forward to his passing. On the other hand I know he is ready. Everyone he grew up with are gone, my mother has been gone six years, two of his children are gone. He has one sister holding on still but that is all and she is under hospice care. I get the feeling he is afraid we all will go before him sometimes. It takes time but part of the grieving is remembering how lucky you were to have him. It eases the loss.

Thank you Gentlemen. I had thought I was ready for it. I guess there is still a 12 year old somewhere inside me looking forward to the opening day of trout/deer/small game with his dad. If history is any teacher, the pain will dull and be replaced with gratitude.

I firmly believe that the first step towards happiness is having a grateful heart. I'm working on that.

Sorry to hear of your loss Lloyd. My condolences. Lost my mom 4 years ago....my dad turned 89 this past September and is only now just beginning to agree with his kids that he shouldn't go down to his island on Lake of the Woods alone.

Our dads are always the dads of our youth, no matter how time lays them low. As time passes it will become easier to remember the good without the sharp pain of the loss.

Ted, glad you scored at Cabela's. I just ordered 3 flats of Herters 16's. I'm giving some thought of getting back into 16ga reloading, but that's yet to be determined. My two current 16's will both handle factory 2 3/4" ammo, but I'd rather shoot 3/4 or 7/8 oz reloads at skeet rather than the 1 oz Herters. RST's are great, but if I'm going to do a fair amount of target shooting with 16's, the lighter loads are nice.

Renewed my membership at my local club today, and shot a round of skeet with the 28 gauge V19. The Herter's loads worked just fine. Took me to about mid field to find my groove, while doing a little shivering, and then I didn't miss a bird. One round was enough for me, it was cold, or, I was under dressed, or, both.
If I could have only one gun, it might be a 16, Larry. But, I can have lots of guns, and I do. Down to a single 16 now, a Nitro that looks like new, but, I wouldn't mind a German gun in the stable, so, I'll have to keep my eyes open. Can you load 7/8" oz loads for as cheap as the Herter's loads?
How did you make out on the Darne? Triggers fixed?

Best,
Ted
