I think it was more expensive to manufacture than extractors that required only one or two drilled holes for guides.
One can also speculate as to whether or not it also reduced the strength of the action as compared to leaving the action solid.
On the other hand the barrel strength was not compromised by the drilling of hole[s] to guide the extractors.
