To some the dark side of collecting is running out of money before you run out of wants.

As to making money I made more buying real estate, at tax auctions, in the '60' s and early 70's, bought second growth timber or recently cut over timber for back taxes. Forty years later it was old growth or prime timber. Now days tax sales hold few bargains and I don't have that extra 40 years left to me to wait for trees to grow. Anyone who can make lots of money buying and selling guns could make gold out of lead these days.

You'll see gold from those trees again in your lifetime, Jon. Pre-commercial thinning moves harvests closer by 15-20 years. I'm cutting now.

I am frugal because I was effectively raised by a man who lived through the Great Depression. I also had the great good-fortune to work with a number of men in my teens who held similar ideas about money. It has served me very well over the years. I take care of the critical things first, and I pay no-mind to passing fads or destructive behavior. My guns reflect that upbringing. I appreciate beauty, but I value utility much more. Probably why all of my cars are at least 10-years old now.
