Bronze wool is so common where I live I am perplexed why others have problems. In W. Canada any grocery store and most hardware stores carry bronze wool. i.e. Loblaws, Safeway, Co-op, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Walmart

Tamid, are you thinking about the brass or copper scrubbing pads? If so its not the same as brass wool. Curious.

You are correct. I am thinking of the scrubbing pads rather than the wool. My mistake.

I believe regular steel wool has oil in it so it won't rust and it has to be removed first when doing Damascus barrels. Maybe some guys who have more experience than me will chime in.

Paul -- you're right about the oil. You can remove it with acetone.

I read somewhere once to burn off the oil when using stoel wool for carding bluing. I never did figure out how to burn the oil without burning up the steel wool.
The acetone works a lot better.

If you are not carding with steel wool then is it necessary to de-oil. Normally if I am working on metal that I will later re-blue, taking rust off or cleaning up I de-oil the metal with acetone after I am done.
