Really using your head. Great job. The sheepskin caught me eye. Not likely a problem but I've seen a couple guns that had to be sheared from sheepskin-lined cases because, even with the lanolin, any moisture on the gun rusted solid.

Tamid, that's great mate!
This really caught my eye , as I am a Fiddle player.
I have a couple of nice old spare empty cases, one has a nice alligator type skin on it. Hmmmm..... smile
And you're right you can get nice modern cases with nice lock up for not much money...Some come with zipper type outer soft case too..A great platform to make a custom case on the cheap & have some fun.
And you can move up to a Viola case for your big bores smile
Check how sturdily the handle is attached though, might need beefing up after gutting out...fiddles are pretty light.
Cheers
Franc

Franc,
Alligator would put the case in a class all by itself. I always thought that exotic skinned gun cases were special.

Many music cases have a mottling that looks like gator skin but is actually a type of plastic. Not saying yours isn't gator as that would make an exotic case indeed

I have done a canvas covered case that is a wood shell. However it was rectangle with a 7 inch depth. I put a covered compartment on the upper case side. I do like the styled cases better and think a plastic shell provides much better protection.

Mr. K. Brown,
Thank you for you kind remarks. Your comment on lanolin caught my eye.

When a sheep skin is processed or tanned the lanolin is extracted, by many different means because it is a highly sought after lubricant for a great variety of uses. The processed sheep skin has very little to no lanolin left in it. It maybe that some processors try to leave some in or put some back in after the extraction and tanning process but I have not read of that.

Perhaps your experience using sheep skin in humid climates has caused it to stick to wood and metal but I rather doubt it is a cause of the lanolin which is an oily preservative and lubricant, and used in some instances for water repellants.

If you have more information on this I would be interested in knowing. Thank you.

Tamid not trying to hijack your thread, just thought I would add my Victorian wooden Violin case version though the motive for this case was "Poaching."
On the subject of Lanolin it is one of the constituents of "Eds Red" gun cleaner and protector.

It was just an observation of what happened to two shotguns of my brother-in-law. They could have been put away wet---he was a surgeon, hunted rarely---because the rust extended on metal from action to muzzle.

The sight of sheepskin in your case hit a panic button. I appreciate you comments on lanolin. I became acquainted with it as a boy, dipping, docking and shearing. Only 30-plus, knew them by name. Not good when it came to eating.
