Many music cases have a mottling that looks like gator skin but is actually a type of plastic. Not saying yours isn't gator as that would make an exotic case indeed

I have done a canvas covered case that is a wood shell. However it was rectangle with a 7 inch depth. I put a covered compartment on the upper case side. I do like the styled cases better and think a plastic shell provides much better protection.
