My answer to you is that someone as anal-retentive as you can never be too careful. Why would you risk having the leather strap on that wimpy Merrington vise break loose? Here you go:
I'll second (or third or fourth) the vise. I just use one of my shop vises, with either the lead or rubber jaw liners. You can really go at the bores with a variety of brushes/tools that way.

Aw geez Ken, next we'll have Larry Brown and Grouse Guy Ben Deeble going on and on about bald eagles dying from lead poisoning after being clamped in a barrel vise with lead jaws.
But seriously, this whole exchange leaves me now wondering if it is best to clamp my guns horizontally or vertically when applying grease to the hinge pins.
