I have a good sized vice mounted on my gun bench with homemade jaw liners of leather covered wood (spruce). It's on a corner of the bench and angled so that when a barrel is being held, one end is above my shop garbage can. Secure and no mess.

Beside my wood cleaning rods I also use a brass rod in a older cordless drill. I have never bothered with a breech bushing as Ken does but am quite careful.

While it's not that difficult to hold the barrels while cleaning, having them securely but safely positioned in the vice just makes the whole process easier and simpler.
