When I use a drill and rod it is the drill I put in the vice. I think I get better control of my barrels and how they are getting clean by holding them in my hands. Also my brass rod has 2 inch wooden dowels spaced along it to prevent any contact of the brass and barrel walls.

Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
