Really? OK, I'm convinced. I've decided to play it really safe when my vintage doubles need to have their barrels cleaned, and fly in a Purdey Trained Barrel Smith from London to take care of them. No better, safer way to do it! grin

Actually, I have managed to do general cleaning of all my shotgun barrels by holding them in my left hand and brushing or swabbing them out. I don't have the muzzles resting on a pile of patches in the bottom of any padded bucket either. The muzzles are clear of the ground so the bristles of the brush can clear, and any excess solvent can drip out onto a section of newspaper on the basement floor. All of the dirty patches also end up on the newspaper, and the mess gets taken out and burned when I'm done. I have always managed to do this without ever once dropping or otherwise damaging my barrels. Of course, if I am going beyond a simple cleaning where the use of a cleaning rod chucked into a drill is required, a vise with padded jaws will be used, and the end of the barrels will be supported as well. I don't want 28 or 30 inches of barrels hanging out there unsupported, clamped only by the lumps at the breech end. Since the rod I use in my drill is made of aluminum and is therefore much softer than the steel of the barrels, I am not at all concerned about damaging either chambers or chokes. I am not allowing my rod to become impregnated with abrasive particles. I would resort to a bushing if I was going to be in there a while cleaning up pits with abrasive paper or a hone, for example. Now, If I was cleaning a rifle, I would be much more concerned about cleaning rod damage to throat or muzzle lands. I even use a ramrod guide to load my flintlock rifles except while actually hunting.

This is all common sense... very basic common sense. If I want some penetrating solvent to remain in my barrels, I orient them horizontally. If I want solvent to drain out, I turn them vertical so gravity can do it's thing. There absolutely are questions too stupid to ask. The question posed in the subject of this thread might be OK if it were posed by a rank beginner. But it's not. And anyone who is so uncoordinated as to drop their barrels while swabbing them is just as likely to damage them by dropping them on to, or out of, their barrel vise. Anyone that careless probably shouldn't handle loaded guns.

LOL Keith. No need to get your panties in a twist. If you don't like the subject, you can always choose to not read the thread! Haha!

Seriously, you are happy doing it your way, I'm happy doing it my way. No big deal.

Sometimes I get ambitious and clean a really dirty set of barrels by holding them in my left hand and drill-spinning a dowel or an aluminum cleaning rod with a bronze brush and fine steel wool through the bores. Anyone who has ever done that and had the barrels get away from them will know the value of using some sort of vise instead of relying on a good left hand grip...Geo

Would that be muzzle up, or muzzle down ?

O.M

That would be "muzzle down", especially if you're using your "Butt Crack" as an improvised vise. grin

Geo, I'm glad we agree about holding barrels in a vise when using a drill with a brush. Can we also agree that Dr. Wanker is an idiot?

James... "panties in a twist", eh? Them's fightin' words! In true DoubleGunShop retaliation, I think I shall have to refer to you as a Libtard, or a Dr. Wanker. Same difference. Just kidding. I just couldn't insult you that severely, even in jest. Actually James, I'm very happy that you raised the point that I didn't have to read the thread if I thought it was that stupid... which I do.

Six months ago, such a dumb thread initiated by old hypocrite, I mean old colonel, would have not even registered a tiny blip on my radar. I would have perhaps glanced at it and shook my head. But ever since he took it upon himself to send me PM's and confront me in this forum in some lame attempt to turn me into a tight-assed pinhead like he is, always followed by his disingenuous blessings, I feel strangely compelled to comment on his frequent stupidity.

I did take it back, so please don't slap me or call me a racist, or misogynist, or anything like that.

Nah, just trying to inject a little levity when things appear to be getting "edgy".

BTW, proper operation of the vise is preferably a two person operation. Since the crank is easily manipulated from the front, it helps to have someone else operate it. That leaves your hands free to apply grease where ever you think it's needed. The problem is that if you don't have a wife or girlfriend, the process can be expensive, depending on the quality of Labor desired.

Ken
