I'm looking at an LC Smith on which someone has polished the receiver and side plates to white (among other "amendments"). I would have no interest in sending the receiver out for professional refinishing, as it would simply not be worth it on this gun. Are there any home-brew options to rid this gun of its toy cap-gun look?

Maybe 'brew' the receiver in your (or someone else's) coffee pot for a month or two? I've seen newly made arrowheads (flint) aged and patinated by placeing them on a rack in the grill while cooking a boston butt...Geo

One or two passes with a gentle rust solution should take off the shine and leave a light grey finish to the parts.
Brine would do but may afterrust unless neutralised.
Rust never sleeps !

I have heard either the acid in strawberry's or soak in STRONG tea.

Smiths do not have a receiver--they have a frame! As do all double guns. Pumps and autos have receivers--doubles don't receive anything-they have frames.

As far as "cold blues" go, Brownell's Oxphoblue is about as good for your project, as you can find.

You might want to make sure it was not annealed before they polished it up. It could be a project that never got off the ground beyond getting it ready to be engraved.
I bought an LC Smith "in the white" and when I took it to my engraver he said the metal was as soft as butter.
I turned that into a crown grade style upgrade. I could justify the expense because they has already spent $$$ on new wood.

I think I saw the gun you are looking at. As mentioned, I would ask why the frame and side plates are that way meaning what exactly was done to the gun. As far as some coloring, I would use a slow rust bluing solution to get the depth of color you want. I don't know how well it will work on the frame though.

A mild solution of hydracloric acid, such as found in barrel browning solutions, works wonders. Degrease with acetone or something similar and swab on. Leave a couple of minutes and wash off. Should leave a very nice grey patina. Repeat if necessary. When finished oil thoroughly.
