A while back I posted a thread on Misfires called: "How to get an extra five years out of you Gun Dog". It dealt with feeding your dog a natural diet consisting of 60% animal fat, 35% meat protein, and 5% organs.

Since then, one of my setters developed a tumor. I had allowed some carbs to creep back into his diet. Starting in January, I put him on a strict diet using the above macro nutrient percentages, and now his tumor has shrank 75%, to the point it no longer bothers him and he is able to act normally. Eventually, it should disappear completely. Proper nutrition is the key, both for canines and humans.

Regards
Ken

A local woman has a 23 year-old French Brittany. She owns a feed and seed store. I asked her what she fed her dog and it's commercial dog food. For the past ten years, Taste of the Wild. Hope your dog continues to improve. Gil

Ken,
Over on the Gundogsupply forum, you can find years of nutrition threads.

I'm no doctor or vet, but that 60% fat sounds like it would cause pancreatitis?

No, 60% fat is actually the percentage found if the dog was eating an animal. It works out to one third fat by weight, since fat has nine calories per g, as opposed to protein's four. It results in approx 60% of calories, which in the absence of carbs causes the dog to secrete glucagon rather than insulin, which is more healthy and does not suppress, but stimulates the immune system. Pancreatitus occurs when eating carb/fat combinations which suppress glucagon production and cause hyperinsulinemia. Same as in people. That's why dogs are often used in diabetes trials. Much canine nutrition info out there is crap, sponsored by dog food companies. Denials of both Evolution, as well as Biochemistry. Same as human nutritional info. My dogs typically live to 17 years plus.

Regards
Ken

My previous Labrador was bred by a Scottish gamekeeper. His [censored] won the British nationals in 1994. Because his dogs are worked hard during the season, he feed them tripe from the stomachs of the stags which he stalks. No cost, and very high in fat.

Hmm. Sorry for the deletion. I was using the British term for a female dog

Tripe, as well as other offal, is very healthy for dogs. I feed it whenever I can get it. I'm able to buy beef kidney by the case for less than $1 per pound. Whenever my friends have steers butchered or kill a deer I always ask them to save me the offal. It's the first thing that predators go for when they make a kill. It's like Easter Candy to dogs.

Ken

All my (5) setters had skin and gut issues; proving Darwin was confused

Went through lamb & rice and salmon & rice.
Found out Dirk had recurrent pancreatitis and went to Petco and read nutritional infro of every dog food in the store. Found Natures Recipe venison and rice (and there are others) with only 10% fat
https://www.naturesrecipe.com/dog-food/healthy-skin/venison-meal-and-rice-recipe
Skin much better and gut issues completely resolved.

Nutragenetics (legitimate) has shown us all to be different, mostly genetically and gut flora determined, as are our dogs.

I tried to convince Chuck this was the famous "T-bone back" ;(
