It always killed doves and quail for me well, and patterned well out of the two 16 bore percussion guns I have owned. Nothing wrong with experimenting, tho'.

Greg: I believe the barrels are Stub Twist.
Stub Twist was used on quality guns 1820s-40s, then both Stub Twist and an early Laminated Steel into the 1860s (as nail stubs were becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.)
Crolle Damascus was available in the 1820s, but Two Iron large scroll 'English Two Stripe' was not in general use until the mid-1800s, and with Three Iron 'Oxford' and a later Laminated Steel were used c. 1850-1890s.
There is an English Damascus tutorial, mostly courtesy of Stephen Helsley here

A very nice gun. It is a blessing to something like that to shoot.

Unfortunately I have no experience with antique muzzleloaders to be able to provide you quality input.

Thanks all for the great information, comments and interesting links.

I will of course get an appraisal on the bores and go from there.

Drew you are a wealth of knowledge on Damascus, please let me know if you have use for a good photo of these barrels, the ones posted were just taken with my phone.

Cheers,

GDU.
