My question is about the Simson, Sauer, Merkel "post war" Suhl guns. Specifically, were they all built on the same frame size (12,16,20 ga.)
Also, I have read it posted on the internet that Merkel builds it's shotguns on it's double rifle frame and they are heat treated different than the others makes. Don't know if this heat treat info is true but it would be interesting to know when Merkel started this practice.

The Merkel double rifle is on a 20 Ga frame size. Some say they build the double rifle on the 20 Ga shotgun frame, and some say the opposite. But there are different frame sizes. I had a 20 Ga Sauer post war on a 20 Ga frame size. But as far as post war guns go, I really don't like very many of them. The best quality was pre-WW1.

Generally speaking, those I have seen and held, have different frame sizes for each gauge. I can't say about the 28 and 410 though.

Currently, Merkel has two frame sizes for the double rifles, M140 are built on a 20ga size frame, the M141 is built on a 28ga size frame. Merkel 28ga and 410's are both built on a 28ga size frame. I have handled a number of postwar Merkel rifles and shotguns, my observation is that the frame on rifles is different from the shotgun frames. The 12 and 20 are different sized frames, the 16 is a good question. Next to me I have a postwar Sauer 16 and a postwar Merkel 12, the 16 "looks" smaller than the 12 and does weigh about 6oz less. If I can find some time I will take some measurements.

Ken, That would be great. I did notice that the 16's were listing 6-7 oz lighter than the 12's and was curious if it came from the barrels or frame. Any good sources of info on the guns would be appreciated.

I know that the 16ga Merkel 47 147 ect are on a 12ga frame while the newer 1620 model uses the 20ga frame...

Hi DD,
The Simsons I have (12 and 16) have different sized frames.
