The only thing moving the compensating screw will tell Gary is if the face/upper interior surface for the cocking hook is worn. If it is then I suggest someone who is able to TIG the surfaces and then fit the hook to the lug so it will cock on opening. Best, BILL

Well I got the forearm on it this evening and it cocked the hammers and indicators nicely! Thanks to everyone for you advice and assistance. Now if I can just get some barrels sleeved by the end of October......grouse in trouble!

Are you telling us NOW that your only trouble was that you were expecting it to work properly with the forend OFF, through all this?

Embarrasslingly I guess it appears I did. I was waiting on the forend to arrive which had been sent seperately. Being more familiar with O/U's it didn't occur to me that the forend had to be on. Seems a no brainer now of course. Sorry for the confusion but I certainly appreciate the help and I hope to learn much more.

Gary,
Grandma always told me the only "dumb" questions were the ones I didn't ask. No harm, no foul. I think you will find your LeFever one of the best classic American SxS's ever made. Have yet to see anything of that vintage as well and simply engineered. Further the stock demensions/proportions/feel/sweep are some of the finest I have ever handled. Let us hope Ken Hurst's project-a LeFever repro/revival comes about. Enjoy your gun and consider joining the LeFever collectors society. Best, Dr. BILL

Thanks Bill...appreciate it. I saw this fine old gun on ebay and knew enough about them that I hated to see it get parted out. Fine wood, a little surface rust, and good metal. The previous owner had cut the barrels off for self defense which I was able to obtain seperately. It appears that it's been lying or standing somewhere for who knows how long. It is truley remarkable how tight the action, the barrel fit, the safety is and how tight the forearm snaps on the barrels. The wood to metal fit ain't too shabby either. It will probably never be worth what it is going to cost to restore it but as I mentioned I didn't puchase it as an investment or as a collector, I just hated to see it get parted out. Over the next year or so My dad and I are going to have it restored as best we can to it's former glory...I'll share before and afters when we're finished.
