Herschel,
The .22WCF was a black powder cartridge, chambered in the typical rifles of the day. The first 22 Hornets were high pressure, smokeless powder cartridges, in strong actions; and loaded in .22WCF cases. When they started to load 22 Hornet on a commercial basis, they thickened the rims, to insure their ammo couldn't be fired in the old rifles. I guess lawyers in those days were pretty much like the ones today. The Germans were not as afraid of lawsuits( their proof laws offered good protection) so when they hot loaded the .22WCF, they didn't thicken the rims. They called this cartridge 5.6x35R Vierling. The Hornet was listed as 5.6x36R Hornet( note the "6") but was usually just called the Hornet.
