There you are Brent, shooting one of those custom Don Brown's Henry rifles!!!
A question, how do you like those Pedersoli rifles?

Well, sort of a Don Brown. The barrel is a full octagon, falsemuzzled barrel with Pope rifling from Bobby Hoyt. There are some other nonstandard features too.
The Pedersoli Gibbs, of which I have owned one, can be a quality rifle. One must be sure that it has one of the "good" barrels. I think (I'm no expert here) that there was a period when their barrels were pretty good, but then a later period when they were excellent and now, I don't know. And they must be 18" twist. I'm not sure all of them are.
Off the rack, the best muzzleloader you can buy for sure. Nothing close in the long range game. That said I found mine to be fat in the wood, both wrist and forearm. But I'm a picky bastard.
For sure, they can win you a world championship.

I have read accounts of some fantastic long range shots made by snipers in "The War Between the States" made with muzzle loaders. the Confederates favorite was the Hex bore Whitworth though they never had enough of them for exclusive use. I recall one account where a Rebel Sniper had touched off the shot with his Whitworth at a Union General who was shaving in the morning. Just as he touched off the General dropped his razor & stooped to pick it up. The sniper's bullet broke the mirror he had hung on a tree. Had he not stooped at that precise moment for the dropped razor it would have caught him in the head. Range as I recall was extremely close to a mile. A number of Union snipers used the linen cartridge Sharpes with good effect though I doubt that for extreme range it was the equal of the Whitworth.

You're not the only one who has said that, Brent. Others who were at that shoot have also said that they were chunky and thick.

treblig you have me at a disadvantage that I can't put your name and face with your handle, but it does occur to me that, if I was serious about a Pedersoli, I would simply slim it down some and then refinish and rechecker. There are VERY nice rifles buried in side those things. You just have to patiently tease them out.
I wonder if anyone has done that?

Beautiful rifle John!! Can you give us some details?
Treblig, All my rifles are self assembled as live varmint guns. This one is built on a Rem 788 action with a 26" barrel refitted from a 700VLS. Chambered .260 Rem with zero headspace. A Richards Microfit thumbhole laminated stock with 2-1/4" forend. It is topped with Weaver T36 scope mounted with Burris Signature rings. It will shoot aggregate groups in the .3's @ 200yds. I shot it very limited times at 1000 yds, Light Gun= 5rd groups and all groups for score stayed under 21" and in the scoring rings. Wish I had more time and resources to play again. John

Brent I wasn't there. I'm just real interested in long range rifle shooting especially muzzleloaders. I've read that account of the Creed's Moor shoot in Ned Robert's book many times.

The world record for the longest confirmed combat kill shot is back in Canadian hands. A JTF2 sniper killed a Daesh insurgent from the astonishing range of 3,450 meters - shattering the old record by an amazing 975 meters. He was using a MacMillan Tac-50, .50 cal sniper rifle.
Edit....see my next post for working link
