I have read accounts of some fantastic long range shots made by snipers in "The War Between the States" made with muzzle loaders. the Confederates favorite was the Hex bore Whitworth though they never had enough of them for exclusive use. I recall one account where a Rebel Sniper had touched off the shot with his Whitworth at a Union General who was shaving in the morning. Just as he touched off the General dropped his razor & stooped to pick it up. The sniper's bullet broke the mirror he had hung on a tree. Had he not stooped at that precise moment for the dropped razor it would have caught him in the head. Range as I recall was extremely close to a mile.
A number of Union snipers used the linen cartridge Sharpes with good effect though I doubt that for extreme range it was the equal of the Whitworth.
