One might add the following to this list:
"A 16 gauge shotgun carries like a 20 gauge, and hits like a 12 gauge."

The 3" 20, the wonder shell which patterns like crap. Well that's what I've seen not what they told us. And those 3" shells, in a light 20, kicked worse than any 12 ever did to me.

And now every production 20 that most people could afford is a "Mag-numb"! I blame Francis Sell.
(Full disclosure: I do load 3" 20s when I'm stuck with shooting steel.)

This is fact; Length of the shot column in a nominal size bore with no shot collar is virtually identical for 1 oz in the 28ga, 1¼ oz in a 20, 1 7/16 oz in a 16 & 1 3/4 oz in a 12. All of these loads in My "Not So Humble" Opinion are better handled in a barrel with a Bigger Hole in in it. The .410 incidentally with this same length column will have just shy of 9/16 oz.

A case of Winchester paper 28 ga shells with one ounce loads of number 6 shot came with my 12 -th Christmas present a Winchester model 12 in 28 gauge. I thought they were the perfect load for ducks over decoys. Now days I hate one ounce loads in the 28 but I do wish I could return to those days of lead shot for ducks with another case of those shells and reflexes of my youth. I'd be a very happy man. Ten bird duck limits, lead shot and baiting was legal as long as it was no closer 500 yards as I recall. I baited many a area with acorns back then. I just have the ducks what they were eating up the narrow creeks. We had fat ducks and plenty of them.

A whole lot of outdoor writers criticized the 3" 20ga. Back when Webley & Scott were still in business, they sent a model called the 720 over to our side of the pond. The 720 was actually a 702 (middle of the 3 grades in the 700 series) . . . with 3" chambers because it was for the American market. I had one of those, which I recall weighed closer to 5 1/2# than it did to 5 3/4. I don't know how many people shot magnums in them, but I wasn't one!

The only gun I recall shooting any 3" 20's (1 1/4oz) from was a Richland 707, which with 28" barrels weighed in at 6¼ lbs. It was bearable for a few shots but not truly comfortable. My feelings are if you need an ounce & a quarter of shot why not shoot a 12. If you need an ounce why not shoot at least a 20 or better yet a light 16. I did take a some of those fired 3" 20's & reload them with 1 1/8 oz of #5's. On the few occasions when I carried a shotgun to the squirrel woods they were poison on the bushy tails, but no more so than a 16 would have been with the same load.

Miller you must have read Francis Sell also. Bobby I did. didn't agree with him 100% but I did like the 20 gauge. That little Italian 707 was actually a fairly nice gun for the money. Bought it Mail Order through the old Herter's catalog just Prior to the '68 GCA cutting out mail order. After I got my first Lefever I switched back to the 12 & gave this one to my son. He still has it. I don't think he shoots it much anymore, he's real big into Pistol shooting now, along with both his Son & Daughter.
