QUOTE ""A 16 gauge shotgun carries like a 20 gauge, and hits like a 12 gauge."
Do you disagree with the first premise or the latter, or both. Why?"
Both are incorrect -- 16 gauge shotguns are usually heavier than 20 gauge shotguns...and 12 gauge shotguns normally throw more shot weight at the same or higher velocity.
Nevertheless, I do own and use a 16 gauge shotgun.

UOTE ""A 16 gauge shotgun carries like a 20 gauge, and hits like a 12 gauge."
A better variation of the sixteen gauge axiom is:"It hits like a 20 and kicks like a 12" and shells are harder to come by...Geo
I druther say "A 16 carries better than a 12 and hits harder than a 20".
I suppose that those are all from comedy night at Hogwarts

Just little differences of opinion among friends there Wonko. A wise man like yourself though, would recognize that I was right...Geo

Or if you have a 12 and 20 you ought to find a nice 16 to fill in that gap. Never bad when you can come up with a reason to buy another gun. Even my wife knows I need a 10, 12, 16, 20, 28 and .410. Then I explained there were 14, 24 and 32's I still need. Wonder is she was not surprised and just told me find a nice one so I don't have to buy two of each. I love that woman.
Been thinking about my 24 and 32 gap. Missed a Manufrance Ideal 24 gauge in mint condition. Who knew others would have a 24 gap as well. Problem was I suspect they made very few of them and fewer still are like mint, so someone just had to buy it for his collection. Another one will come along someday.

Or, a 16 double costs less than a 20, but a little more than a 12, quality of each being equal.

They (16) are cheaper because everyone knows they don't make shells for them anymore. Another known truth.

It used to be true that 16 gauge guns sold for small money. Not now true. in 1989 I bought a 16 ga. Fox AE with factory straight grip, 28" Krupp barrels, and double triggers in high condition for $2200. A fair price at the time. Same gun would be about double that now as the 16s have become appreciated by bird hunters again.
Should have bought a 16 gauge English best gun for $4k to $5k.
