Rec'd from Ben Wise, via a WtS:

1. The infection appears to have been quelled.

2. Bill got a tracheotomy and is breathing better, but still with some asistance.

3. He is most certainly "with us", alert and able to respond to 'yes' or 'no' questions. Can't talk much with all that stuff down his throat.

4. The MD Docs feel his outlook is much improved, and that he is on the mend, tho has a way to go.

Relax; we're all experts here.

Thanks for the positive update John.

Bill and Rosalie know we are keeping them in our prayers, but I'll say it again.

Report much the same this morning. Our thoughts and prayers greatly appreciated. It has been a long haul but the medicos are optimistic. Bill is a tough guy and I mean that in the best possible way.

According to Rosalie this morning, Bill wanted his computer yesterday. That is good news indeed. Also, he is starting to fuss. That's the Bill we know and love.

I've checked the other BBS's and haven't found any 'Bill' updates since 9/5.... Has anyone got any more of a current status?...

Bill is still in the hospital, he has been on and off the ventilator, his left lung collapsed but is back up. I believe that he removed his feeding tube and was able to take light food and water by mouth. He still has a way to go and is getting frustrated with the whole mess (understandably so) but it sounded like the worst is behind him.

Off the respirator for a couple of days now, and out of ICU and into a step-down unit. He's definitely on the road to recovery.

He did indeed pull out his feeding tube and is eating some solid foods. Still has his trach, so he still can't talk. He's doing much better. Still some goop in his lungs, but the docs say as long as he's breathing on his own, he's getting better. No talk of him going home just yet; needs to build his strength.

Just in from WtS, via E-mule.:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Missive the First
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, all y'all

I talked with Ben yesterday evening. Here's a quick summary

the trach thingie was leaking so they put in a larger one - OK now but the doc says no talking. Yes he was conversing

He has been off the respirator for up to 36 hrs !!!! They have put him back on so he sleeps better but has otherwise been off the thing

So they took some lung pix. Doc says that they don't look improved but that is not always certain and he IS improved a bunch so screw the pix

He has been out of bed and in a wheelchair ( you can cheer here) (just unbelievable)

He today is being moved to a non-ICU unit that is a sorta halfway house to regular hospital care (cheer again). Ben thinks the respirator thing is the factor that will make/break the decision to regular-size him

Ben will try to call me again today to report on the move.

Pending the news from Ben I will prolly be off to see him this week

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
2nd missive.
Ben just called. He had been with Bill most of the day. Bill had spent the day in the wheelchair. Ben says that Bill is way weak but getting pretty feisty and obviously frustrated by not being able to talk.
If you've talked with Bill you know that he is a very active talker. Bout as nice as I know how to say that. At any rate he's silently ranting.
He also made it known that he could pass on the hospital pears and go for a piece of pizza. Ben decided WTF and gave it to him and Bill munched it
down. Ben also asked him about the visitor situation.
Bill thinks that holding off a couple weeks will prolly see him out of the hospital (hmm...maybe) and conversant so I guess I'll hang that long.
I have to say I'm little less than amazed that he has come back even as far as he has. I may have to sacrifice a rat in his honor.
I'll get the address of the place and send it along to all tomorrow. Just did not think of it till now. Get old get stupid I swear.
Share this how ya like -
Bill, you can not keep a good man down, and I know of few, if any, better. Hope you return home soon and that someday, I again have the pleasure of visiting with you and your lovely bride.
What is the latest? A friend has asked about a possible visit and I don't know what to tell him. I'm sure Rosalie has her hands full with calls and questions. Thanks for keeping us up to date. Murphy
