I took a very quick look at a IJ 12 gauge today and plan to take a better look tomorrow and take some pictures. What caught my eye was the 30 Single barrel had a raised solid matted rib, with a narrow schnabel type forend. The reciever was case colored with an external hammer. I was told it is a IJ SBT gun. Its clearly a vintage gun in pretty good condition. I have looked on line but have not found a similar gun. Any ideas on what this might be?

It is probably an Iver Johnson Special Trap. If it is original it has a 32" barrel, and I've never seen one with a case-colored action. I have two of them, and have seen others. All still had original finishes, and had matte blued actions. This is a good, original example of the gun, if badly overpriced, with what is generally believed to be the proper forend. Note that it is not the commonly found schnabel, which is likely a replacement. The era catalogs all pictured the gun as having the fuller trap style forend. https://stevebarnettfineguns.com/iver-jo...ingle-barrel-12 SRH

Thanks Stan, yes I looked at this picture and it looks very similar except the one I looked at had a raised solid rib and case colored reciever, and a different style forend. I will try to get pictures today.

If it has a solid rib and a narrow schnabel type forearm, it is just a solid ribbed Champion, which came with a bit of checkering on the grip and forearm. It was made in 12-, 16- & 20-gauges and later years also .410-bore. The Special Trap with the ventilated rib was only offered in 12-gauge. Most Iver Johnson catalogs are undated, but the first I have that shows the Special Trap is A-29, which also has the Super-Trap, the vent ribbed, beavertail forearm version of their Hercules double.

Yep, Steve's my bud, but that one is about $500 out of line afaic. I've handled that gun and it is nice, they are rare, but I just don't see it worth any where near that. JR

I like that Iver Johnson. Too pricey for me though...Geo Especially with that non-original Redhead recoil pad which appears to my eyes to be set at a bad pitch.

Thanks for the info. Helping a friend today so I did not get pictures taken. Sounds like it is not anything real spcial, although it looks decent. I am guessing there is no number designation just Champion?

Researcher, any level of persuading to get you to repost some of your catalog photos that won't show up anymore? Your Ithaca posts were my favorite.

The IJ trap gun, per my 1940 Shooters Bible, sold for $18. That's a real bargain compared to $115 for the least expensive Elsie SBT shown in the same book. (The standard Champion single shot was $9).
An old gunsmith friend had one of those IJ's. If someone wanted to shoot trap with a single that shouldn't cost a mint, it might be of interest.
