One of my resolutions this year is to get serious about patterning my shotguns. I'd like to remove at least some human error from the equation and maybe save my shoulder some pain by stabilizing the guns on a bench. I see products like the Caldwell Lead Sled https://www.walmart.com/ip/Caldwell-Lead-Sled-Plus-Shooting-Rest/17688504 designed to hold guns steady and absorb recoil. Most of the applications tend to be rifles and single barrel shotguns. Anyone have experience using this or something similar with side-by-sides? Also, anyone tried this IPone shotgun patterning app? https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shotgun-profiler/id948524943?mt=8 Looks like a pretty quick and easy way to get a lot of info on your patterns. Bill, while you most likely won't be shooting heavy loads from old guns, a yielding surface is far better on an old gun than something rigid and non-yielding. Get a slip on Limbsaver pad and it will make all the difference. Gil

Bill,
You should pattern your guns the same way you use them. If you are shooting slugs at deer off a rest, then pattern them that way. Otherwise, bring the gun to your shoulder, while standing, and touch the gun off as you aquire the target, in as fluid a movement as possible. Don't dawdle while doing it.

Thanks guys. Good advice on both counts. I was thinking in terms of checkimg barrel regulation and comparing POA with POI. But thinking about it, shooting from the shoulder will yield that info statistically if you shoot enough rounds and will actually tell you where the pellets land when you are pointing the gun, which is ultimately the whole point.

Thanks! Bill Not necessary for patterning of bird shot on flat sheet of paper. For slug shooting old style leather or leather type bene bag of appropriate size on standing bench is the way to go. Caldwell lead sled is designed for those testing or sighting in long range heavy recoiling rifles. They are interested in tiny groups at 100 yards or more. You will see lots of pics at places like 24 Hour campfire where quality of rifle is judged by how small cluster of holes are.
