Just got a Sabatti Big Bore Express in 470 NE in an O/U format.

Can't wait to get it to the range.

My shoulder is slightly apprehensive however.

Serious piece of kit! Who is it made by? Lagopus.....

Sabatti, an Italian company.

They had a checkered past a while back with the way they regulated their barrels rather crudely by making muzzle grinds, but it looks lil they learned from those transgressions.

Yeah, I'm thinking of wearing a shotgun pad, and wondering if I should put a hand towel folded over on top of that. That's simply bigger than anything I've handled before. I took one of my .458 Lott and laid it by this 470 NE, and the Lott would probably fit completely inside it with room to spare.. So, like I said.. I'm apprehensive about my first shot. When a couple of my shooting buddies found out I was getting it they said that if I wanted to save money, that one of them could hold me whip the other repeatedly punched me in the shoulder.

Congrats. As long as the gun fits you within reason and it's not really light, you should be fine. Use good technique and square up behind the gun (not shoulders angled). Use the shotgun pad at first but you won't need the towel. Don't shoot it off the bench. I find the 470 to be a big push but not a sharp recoil in a properly built gun. What's it weigh?

It's a heavy gun for sure. And my cheek finds the cheek rest on the but stock as a good fit.

No bench? Ok, glad you mentioned that, as I'd probably have tried it that way!

You will be fine with a 10# 470 but seriously, don't bench it. It wouldn't hurt you but you wouldn't like it. Use shooting sticks or a post if needed to check sights.

And yes, I just double checked the paperwork, the gun is listed at 10#.

Really appreciate the comments. I'm fairly new to double rifles, though not new to shooting in general, etc.

Do you have the ballistic difference of the .470NE vs the .458 Lott. May not be that much difference in spite of the sizes. The .458Lott is likely a lot higher pressure round then the .470NE.
I have a copy of John Taylor's book but its in a book case behind the Christmas tree right now so unavailable until after Christmas. He didn't have access to the lott round of course but as I recall the .470NE was loaded to approximate the ballistics of the various various .450 NEs due to laws prohibiting there use in certain countries because the .45s were considered military calibers.
