You will get used to the recoil quickly enough, but the first one you touch off might be memorable - don't drop it! Shooting more than 20 full power loads gets old but you can use reduced loads all day long. As Bryan said, don't even think about shooting from a bench - you need to be able to rock back. And you will never again notice the recoil from a shotgun or smaller rifle!

I use Reloader 15 with a foam filler rod and 500 grains bullets. Accurate and same velocities as H 4831. Felt recoil is much less than the 106 grains of H 4831. Somewhere around 86 or 87 grains of Reloader 15 is about right. Do a search on the Accurate Reloading.com forum and a lot of information will turn up. Mine is a Chapuis SXS double and it has plenty of power and a fun gun to play with. Perfect choice for the rabbits in the garden patch!

Off hand, I think there is about 20k less pressure with the 470 NE than the 458 Lott. That makes a big difference.

Nice info, thanks guys.
I do reload, and cast, and have made up bunnyfart 45-70 loads using 325grcast over trailboss.

Once I get empty brass and a mold, I'd like to do similar to get son gun time.

Anyone have a recommendation on a lee mold for 470ne? Thanks

Hmm. I dont think lee has one, open to suggestions. Course.. I'd probably need gas checks too. Hmm...

Might be easier to start with some pre manufactured .475.

Looking for recommendation for projectiles.

Thanks again

You can also, Christopher, use 350 to 365 grain bullets with the same charge of powder as your 500 grain load. They should regulate (called the 3/4 effect), but may print a bit higher on the target. Once you begin to reload, IMR 4831 should give you enough loading density so you do not need a filler.

Yes, try the first two shots off sticks and then move to the bench. I used a Paste recoil shield when working up a load for my 500/450 which is about the same recoil as your .470 but that old rifle was a half pound heavier.

Practice drill included two rifles: 500/450 and a double in 350 Rigby No. 2 (you can use a bolt in 30-06 or what have you). Fired big bore standing, offhand at 50 yards, just four shots. Put the big bore down and fired ten, standing offhand at 100 yards with the smaller bore. Then back to the big bore for another four. Started with just 12 big bore, ending with smaller bore. Fools yourself and dodges creating a flinch. Also good practice shooting off hand, and very good for learning how to reload the big bore quickly (then break it open as you use the smaller bore).

Best of the Season,
Tim
