Open apology due here. When liverwort put this thread up, I came down on his questions pretty hard, unneccessarily so. Got a pm from him, he pretty much expressed his displeasure at what I wrote, using "internet muscle" as an apt description of my behavior here, as well as some disparaging remarks about me and my family, which were also unnecesaary to get my attention, but I won't let that stop me from saying I'm sorry for what I wrote, which I took down asap.
It did, however, bring home to me the fact that sometimes I reply too harshly to some perfectly benign things asked here, regardless of how I see them, and I intend to dial that back. Y'all feel free to let me know when I backslide.
This was on my mind.

I will certainly accept any genuine apology offered.
The way I see this board, is like this. It brings us together to share a common interest not to highlight our differences that of course exist. Some of us have a double gun or two perhaps none at all and are considering the first one. Others have extensive collections and corresponding knowledge.
We can come to this board to share or we can use "internet muscle to position. The intent of the board, I believe, is to share. It is the individuals choice how they use it. Mr. Weber's discretion recognized certainly.
I come here for some relief as I am not seeking any more trials.

JR John, I have to say I sometimes am a bit taken aback by the apparent certitude you exhibit in some of your posts. Particularly on subjects that are clearly opinions. Not always left with the best taste in my mouth. But....anyone who takes a good lashing as an opportunity for self reflection and can offer a well meaning apology ranks high in my books. We are all often wrong. The important part is to be able to recognize it when it's drawn to our attention. Well done John!

Come on Stan!! Parker Bros. was a subsidiary of a hardware company. Correct; there are a lot of Parker vises still floating around as well as Parker coffee gGrinders, usually seen in the large store variety. My father owned a two horse, one row walking cultivator, made by as I recall Parker Snow & Co, which preceded the Parker Bros Gun Co. Have seen a picture of, but not in person, a Parker, New England type Sewing Machine. The double gun was actually a rather late entry for them. Many of their products preceded "The War of Northern Aggression", which was their catalyst for entering the gun business as I understand it.

There were "farmers" who saw the value in a Parker, and spent that hard-earned money for one. So, the term "farmer grade" is just as ambiguous as "entry level", if not actually somewhat condescending. Why not say "clerk grade", "barber grade" or "mill worker grade"?
Stan, I meant no offense or condescention in my reference to "farmer grade." My own experience with such guns ran to the single barrel, exposed hammer variety of dubious origin. In the Ozarks, subsistence farmers rarely hunted such that a double barrel was needed. They viewed guns as tools only. I believe some of the Brit makers listed farm er grade guns specifically.

I knew that the Parkers produced "hardware", but I still cannot relegate Parkers to the status of "hardware store" guns because of that. In my opinion the term "hardware store" gun has nothing to do with the gun maker's association with the production of other goods, but everything to do with the quality of the gun.
