....Legalizing pot is a way of collecting tax money where none would be had if pot was illegal. Frankly given dire financial situation in many jurisdictions in this country pot use should be legal everywhere. You know, like use of alcoholic beverages and tobacco. This is great news. What else can we tax for the good of the jurisdiction? When it comes to ammo, how come some of the folks that live there think it's an incremental back door ban?

With 30% of the population at the poverty level depending on Uncle Sugar for benefits Sacramento should just go ahead and legalize crack, heroin, etc. Why stop at pot? I also see where more freebies are being batted around. A little more effort and the entire state could be turned into Baltimore.

Baltimore was a nice city until the late 60's when people started to flee to the suburbs. Then it became 90% Democratic, black, and they people of Baltimore all decided working was not for them. There are no big cities in the US run by the give it all away party, Democratic to non tax payers, that I would ever consider living in under any circumstances except jail confinement in a few of them. Our jail prisoners have cable in their cells, Skype on a cell monitor and internet access from their cells. Add on free medical care and food. No wonder no one fears jail here.
When one party wins all the elections there is no one to keep them honest. So they can just give away going ever deeper in debt. That's today's Baltimore 90% black, run by blacks. demanding their fair share of everyone else's money. California is going downhill the same way. A friend explained it to me 40 years ars ago when he said all the normal people were moving out of California as fast as they could. Then he said what was left would be Socialist, Communist and Democrats if you could seperate them. Now I add in a few libertarians as well.

"When one party wins all the elections" seems to overlook who's in the WH. California was a failed state under the Republicans. It's come back dramatically under a Democratic administration. Ky Jon is like all the Republicans these days. All he cares about is paying less in taxes. Never mind the condition of ordinary folks. As more and more of the country's wealth is in the hands of the 1%, let's all cheer for the new tax reform. There is certainly no one to keep the Republicans honest. They've raised lying to a new level. They represent the finest government money can buy.

Bill, In addition to lower taxes we as good republicans always vote for those who support tort reform too.
Socialism is almost the worst.

California was a failed state under the Republicans. California has never been what any rational observer would call a "failed state." It has consistently overcome the bumbling and fumbling and stumbling of its governments, and has been successful in spite of those governments. Great natural resources, great climate, deep water ports on the Pacific Rim, massive agricultural and natural resource production, etc. Even the worst government (which we seemingly are suffering under right now) has a hard time overcoming all those advantages. But the current crowd is giving it a good try, inviting illegals, driving out a lot of the productive actual citizens and taxpayers, and simply spending too much of other peoples' money while they trample on our constitutional rights.

I was in San Francisco for Christmas, visiting the kids. Saw a TV interview with the acting mayor, during which she said the city is trying to come up with a way to give preferential treatment for pot licenses and pot shop jobs to those who had been prosecuted under the old laws. Affirmative Action for dopers! What a state, always looking out for the criminals. They do this because they're smart. It is far better to give them chance at making a living and be productive members of society instead of committing crimes and ending up in jail again which costs taxpayers a lot of money.

What Rocky Mountain Bill Ferguson is lamenting is the slowing pace of income redistribution under the current administration. The top 1% pay 45.7% of all personal income taxes while the bottom 80% pay about 15%. In a recent rant of mine directed at other fuzzy thinking on this board I pointed out the bonuses and capital investment pledged by US companies as a result of new tax reform. That’s good news. I would offer up, however, that a goodly number of the top 1% are no friend of Republicans, but they will enjoy the benefits of tax reform like everyone else. If that disturbs their collective consciousness they should chip in a little extra so they can sleep at night. I would recommend they review the most (in) famous of the progressive charities, the Clinton Foundation, for tips on giving to the most needy.
Happy New Year
