Need a bit of help with a value check. I'm sorry that I do not have pictures. The gun is currently for sale at a pawnshop and taking pictures wasn't welcome:

W.H. Baker 1897 hammergun
16ga
30" damascus
Full/Full
Fishtail top lever
Very good bores, few scattered small and shallow pits on barrel exterior
Numbers match
Factory buttplate
Tight, on the face, no cracks, crisp trigger pulls, somewhat of a visible pattern, nice modest scattered engraving, action is gray.

What's an acceptable price, superb price, and what price would be paying too much? I know the lack of pictures complicates things.

$900 OTD, which is hard to gather together, but possible if it was a good deal.

It does not sound like a very good deal to me. Unless it looks a lot better than what I'm picturing from your description I'd pay $600 for it if I wanted it..Geo

16ga would be tempting though.

Thanks Geo. I have neither a 16ga or a hammergun, and it does look nice (by my standards = low), but I don't need another "shouldn't have bought it" experience.

I looks like the 1897 images here, except that the checkering is more worn, the color is largely gone, and the damascus contrast is more muted.

Bill, I refreshed my memory on the 1897 from your link to the Baker Collectors site, and didn't remember it was a sidelock. It's a better looking gun than what I was thinking of...Geo

That gun looks to have been refreshed (not restored) at one time. The fishtail lever seems to be a home job and not a factory job.

Just amateur observations. Hope some of the Baker collectors chime in.

Those pictures are just an example of the model, and are at the Baker Collector site, so Im sure they are legit.

Either way, it doesnt seem like the double I found is over priced and the seller wont budge. Too bad.
