Part of "what is proper" is what a shooter is accustomed to shooting.
In my case, I grew up shooting a circa 1900 Parker 20 gauge, so the only doubles I own are Parkers and Parker repros with splinter fore and straight grip aft. Just in a rut, I reckon.

What's proper is in the eye of the owner. For me I can put up with everything except camo finish, big beaver tail forends, vent ribs and glow worm front sights. Everything else works for me. I hated some of those SKB with big forends and vent ribs. Didn't look at me see if they even had a glow worm bead.

Speaking of SKB's, Steve Bodio told me about a dog trainer in the Dakotas that spray painted his Ithaca SKB 20 double with a coating of bright orange paint from buttplate to muzzle so that he could find it in the grass when he put it down to deal with a dog. Gil

What's proper for me might not be proper for you. But I do know this would be mighty proper for me:

I agree SKB. That must have been a big director as well. Big head and big arms.

Two of my Remington 1894 F grade trap guns have beavertail forearms - someone did a nice job. All my other guns have straight and pistol grips with splinter forearms. I like the straight grips for hunting. It seems my wrist is in a more natural position. Two barrels, then naturally - two triggers.

It's missing a trigger.
