In my less than 2.75" chambered guns I use either a 2.75" shell, star crimped or a cut down shell to 2.5" and roll crimp. I've never used manufactured 2.5" shells and got to wondering if manufactured 2.5" shells are star crimped and would it make a difference if I star crimped my 2.5" shells instead of roll crimp.
I understand the difference in increased pressure from a roll crimp to a star crimp is minimal so I am really looking at ease and speed of reloading.

Cutting 2.75 to 2.5 inches for a 2.5 or 2&9/16'th chambers is really no task at all. I use 2.5 in short chambered guns. Star crimp smokeless loads and roll crimp my black powder loads. Both plastic and paper hulls.

I star crimp my short shells as it is MUCH faster and I am NOT trying to cram in the maximum amount of shot in the short hull.

I star crimp short 20 gauge shells and use both on 16 gauge shells.

Why?

"Star crimp smokeless loads and roll crimp my black powder loads"
Why? Just for fun, I'll guess that he doesn't want to run blackpowder through is reloading press.

I use RST 2-1/2" shells. They are star crimped.

I don't see a problem using blackpowder in reloading press. I use Mec 600 and have dedicated presses for both 12 and 20 blackpowder reloading. I don't use the same press for both smokeless and blackpowder.

I roll crimp only when there's nothing better to do in the winter, or if there's a shortage of space in the 2 1/2" shell. I don't save any roll crimped shells - they're a PITA to open up and reload IMHO.

Brent has it! I know which shells are loaded with black powder. I do not run black through my MEC press.
